KINGSTON - The family of Nancy Lanza paid their respects at a private memorial service held Thursday to remember the mother gunned down by her son before he carried out the deadly massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Kingston Police Chief Donald Briggs Jr. confirmed Thursday afternoon that a service for the 52-year-old Lanza took place at an undisclosed location.

About 30 grief-stricken family members quietly gathered at the Depot Road home of Lanza's brother, James Champion a retired Kingston police captain who is now a part-time officer.

While police would not say where the service was held for the slain mother who grew up in Kingston, mourners were at Champion's residence for much of the day.

It's unclear what funeral arrangements the family may be planning for Lanza's 20-year-old son, Adam, the gunman who authorities said shot his mother multiple times in the head while she was in bed and then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where he shot and killed 20 young children and six adults inside the school before committing suicide.

Police were on hand at Champion's house to watch over the property and keep reporters from disturbing the family. A sign was posted on the front door of the house asking the press to respect the family's privacy.

As the services for Lanza and other victims of the country's second-deadliest mass shooting were held in Newtown, questions continued to swirl around a report saying that Lanza was vacationing in New Hampshire in the days before the rampage.

CNN reported Wednesday that Lanza was on vacation by herself at the Omni Mount Washington Resort and Hotel in Bretton Woods from Dec. 11 to Dec. 13.

Adam Lanza was reportedly left at home while she was away.

Lanza checked out of the popular luxury resort on Dec. 13 and returned to Connecticut that night, according to the CNN report. She was murdered the next morning.

Workers from the hotel said they couldn't talk about their guests and referred all questions to Anne Tramer, vice president of communications for Omni Hotels.

Due to guest privacy rules, Tramer said she couldn't confirm the CNN report.

"We have a strict privacy policy for anyone who may stay at the hotel," she said.

Lanza often visited New Hampshire, which is where she was raised and lived until 1998 when she and her family, including Adam and his older brother, Ryan, sold their home in Kingston and moved to Newtown.
