GOFFSTOWN - Chase Gagne was a busy guy on what is supposed to be the holiday break.

The senior goalie made 36 saves to backstop the Goffstown High School hockey team to a 2-1 win over previously undefeated Bedford in Division II action at the Sullivan Arena on Saturday.

"Chase wanted the opportunity today," Goffstown coach Paul Roy said. "We gave him the opportunity and he sure didn't let anybody down. He played on his head."

It was the first loss of the season for the defending champion Bulldogs, who are now 3-1. The win lifts the Grizzlies to 2-2.

Gagne may have saved his best for last when he robbed Bulldog forward Christopher Viola of a goal during a 2-on-1 with less than four minutes left to play. Ten of his 36 saves came in a fast-paced third period, which didn't seem so quick for the Grizzlies.

"It was an eternity," Gagne said about the third period. "It wouldn't go fast enough. I prayed for it to go faster and it wouldn't."

He had a great toe save on a bid by Christopher O'Hara in the first period and got a little help from his defense just about a minute later.

The goalie stopped 36 of Bedford's 38 shots on net. The other save was made by Tyler Brady, who also scored the game-winning goal 59 seconds into the second period.

The goal was set up by Andrew Chretien, who moved the puck into the left side of the zone during the power play. He sent a great centering pass to Brady, who one-timed the shot past Bedford goalie Stevan Tempesta (10 saves).

"I went hard to the weak side and he put it right on my stick," Brady said. "It's a goal by him basically."

Chretien was the one who got the scoring started in the first period. He floated a shot on net from the blue line that somehow found its way over Tempesta's shoulder to put Goffstown up 1-0 with 4:01 remaining.

"We're not going to get 40 shots on net a game," Roy said. "Our mission is to dump it on net and hopefully good things will happen."

The lone goal for the Bulldogs was scored by Brian Collins with 9:14 left in the second period.

Collins stopped a clear attempt by a Goffstown defenseman and swooped in on Gagne, whom he beat on the short side.

Although they kept Gagne and the Grizzlie defense busy, that was all the defending champs would get by the goaltender as Goffstown pulled off the early-season upset.

"Credit to Goffstown, they played well and they played strong," Bedford coach Marty Myers said. "When you have a goalie like Chase that gives you a lot of confidence."
