Tilton farmers market returns next month

TILTON - The Tilton Winter Farmer's Market is about to open for business again, this time offering shopping on Sundays for farm-fresh local foods and homemade goods.

The market will open the weekend of Jan. 5-6 in the building space it occupied last winter, a day longer each weekend than last year, when it was only open on Saturdays.

Founder and operator Joan O'Connor said it was a great success last year, so she's thinking bigger this year.

O'Connor, who is also known for her Henniker home business, Joan's Famous Composting Worms, opened the market in Tilton because she saw a need for a community market.

Her choice for the market's home was strategic - the former Amway building at 67 East Main St. across the street from the AutoServ Family of Dealerships store, and in between Walmart and Lowes, all high-traffic businesses.

Last year the market featured 40 to 45 local vendors who were pleased with the sales of their abundant varieties of winter produce, meats, cheeses, breads and other prepared foods at the market, she said, so they and others are coming to this year's market.

Last year's the store was only open Saturdays, but still drew weekly crowds of shoppers that exceeded 1,200, she said.

One of her sponsors, AutoServ owner Dennis Gaudet, said his business was pleased to be a part of the market.

"I am excited for this opportunity to once again sponsor the market and help bring fresh offerings to the community," Gaudet said.

Among the offerings this winter will be organic produce and greens, meats, eggs, dairy, cheese, breads and pastries, gourmet popcorn, tomatoes, garlic, fudge, apples, cider, honey, granola, maple syrup, jams and jellies, coffee roasters and teas, body care, herbal products, dog treats, and composting worms.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. For more information, go to tiltonwinterfarmersmarket.com.
