Basketball tournaments pushed back due to weather

The champion of the 50th Queen City Invitational Basketball Tournament won't be crowned until Saturday night, a 24-hour delay attributed to winter's first big storm.

The second day of the QCIBT was postponed Thursday and moved to Friday at Manchester Memorial High School. Games continue today at 3 p.m. as Bedford faces Goffstown in consolation play, followed by Manchester West against Trinity of Manchester at 4:30 p.m.

Winners'-bracket action begins at 6 p.m. between defending champion Merrimack and Exeter, followed by Memorial and Manchester Central at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's championship game takes place at 7:30 p.m., preceded by consolation games at 3, 4:30 and 6 p.m.

The storm also delayed the start of the Manchester Central Girls' Basketball Tournament, postponed from Thursday to today. Manchester West faces Lebanon in the tourney opener at 2:30 p.m., followed by Memorial and tournament-newcomer Plymouth Regional at 4, Trinity and Hollis/Brookline at 5:30, and Central and Coe-Brown Northwood Academy at 7.

Saturday's schedule features consolation games at 2:30 and 4 p.m., and winners'-bracket games at 5:30 and 7 p.m. The championship game will take place Sunday at 7, preceded by three more consolation games.

Last year's champion, Bay View Academy from Rhode Island, is not entered in this year's tourney.

Lebanon is considered the favorite to win this year's Central tourney.

At Nashua South, the 2012 Chick-fil-A Boys' Holiday Tournament has been modified from three days to two days.

Games begin today at 3 p.m. between Alvirne of Hudson and Souhegan of Amherst, followed by Thornton Academy of Saco, Maine, against Campbell of Litchfield at 4:30. In Game 3, Nashua South plays Milford at 6 p.m., followed by Nashua North vs. Hollis/Brookline at 7:30.

Saturday consolation games will be played at noon and 1:30 p.m. Winners'-bracket games are set for 3 and 4:30 p.m. Winners of the final two games will be considered co-champions.

The first Queen City Invitational Basketball Tournament championship team - 1963's Bishop Bradley squad - will be honored prior to Friday night's Central-Memorial QCIBT contest.
