There are two First Night celebrations in New Hampshire - Portsmouth and Wolfeboro.

Portsmouth

Entertainment venues stretch from the West End Studio Theatre on Islington Street to the Connie Bean Center at the Portsmouth Middle School on Parrott Avenue.

The annual event will feature a host of musical and theatrical performances.

On Monday, Dec. 31, Pleasant Street from State Street to Congress Street will be closed for a street dance hosted by Portsmouth Community Radio from 5 p.m. to midnight. A fireworks display over the South Mill Pond begin at 7:30 p.m. and ice sculpture work will commence at 1 p.m. in front of the North Church in Market Square.

Ongoing activities will take place at the Connie Bean from 4 to 11 p.m., including Abracadabra! Magic with Phil Smith, storytelling with Peter Sheridan and a Battle of the Bands from 8 to 11 p.m.

Tickets are $20 through Sunday, Dec. 30; cost goes to $25 on the day of the event. Buttons for children younger than 12 are $2. First Night buttons, button outlets and a list of events are available at proportsmouth.org.

Wolfeboro

The Governor Wentworth Arts Council and the Wolfeboro Area Chamber of Commerce once again will host First Night Wolfeboro, a 12-hour, alcohol-free and family-friendly evening of entertainment.

The lineup includes 23 performers in a variety of venues from the Kingswood Arts Center to sites at Brewster Academy.

Early afternoon events include face painting, mask-making and hat-making at Estabrook Hall on the Brewster campus from 2 to 5 p.m.

Hot air balloon making and launch, a family fun project, will take place at the Pinckney Boathouse on Academy Drive at the Brewster campus from 2 to 4 p.m.
