NHIAA holiday tournament roundup: Welch lifts Pembroke to crown

Patrick Welch march to the 2,000-point plateau got off to a good start Sunday.

The junior standout netted 17 points to spark Pembroke to a 58-34 win over Concord for the Capitol Area Boys Holiday Tournament championship at Concord Community College Sunday. Welch reached the 1,000-point mark on Saturday.

"He definitely has a shot of reaching 2,000 points," said Pembroke head coach Matt Alosa. "He's a great player who works hard."

Rene Maher also led the winners with 15 points as the Spartans led 26-16 at halftime. Pembroke out-scored Concord 15-6 in the third period for a commanding 41-22 edge. Samuel Marquis led Concord with nine points.

Girls' basketball

Bedford 54, Bishop Guertin 37:
McKenzie Brown tallied 10 points as Bedford won the Nashua North Girls Basketball Holiday Classic Sunday. Bri Purcell and Haley Driscoll each had nine points in the win.

Nikki Hayner sank four three-pointers to lead the Cardinals with 12 points and Jamie Sherburne had 10 points.

Bow 37, Merrimack Valley 30: Lindsey Nerbonne had 12 points to lead Bow to the championship win in the Capitol Area Girls Holiday Tournament at Concord Community College.

Jordan Neylon led the Pride with nine points.

Pinkerton 69, Lowell 46: Val Martin led a balanced Pinkerton attack with 13 points and Karina Moore added 11 as the Astros rolled in consolation round play of the Greater Lawrence Christmas tournament in Lawrence, Mass.

Pinkerton returns to Division I play on Wednesday night at Trinity in Manchester.

Nashua North 51, Milford 46: Taylor Choate scored 19 points to help North to a consolation victory in the Nashua North Christmas Tournament in Nashua. Brianna Hoffman had 13 for Milford while Dina Pitsas added 11.

Hanover 53, Oyster River 38: Lexie Hamilton scored 13 points to help Hanover to the Bobcat Invitational title Sunday evening in Durham. Erica Hinck added 10 for the Marauders who led 18-6 after one quarter and 29-9 at the break. Clare Salmon had 10 points to lead the Bobcats. Meghan Flynn from St. Thomas, Rachel Hill from Somersworth, Alicia Brown from Portsmouth, Dakotah Vondrasek from Timberlane and Salmon from Oyster River were named to the All-Tournament team. Hamilton was named the tourney MVP.

Somersworth 62, St. Thomas 57: Rachel Hill tossed in 23 points to key Somersworth's attack in a consolation victory at the Bobcat Invitational. Mariah Desmarais and Meaghan Flynn each hit for 20 points for St. Thomas.

Portsmouth 64, Timberlane 41: The Clippers opened up a big halftime lead and cruised to a consolation win at the Bobcat Invitational in Durham. Ashley Linane had 13 for the Clippers and Alicia Brown had 12. Masha Lange scored 17 to lead Timberlane and Dakotah Vondrasek added 16.
