AutoFair buys Nashua VW dealership

NASHUA - A new Volkswagen dealership will open on the Merrimack and Nashua border on Wednesday, thanks to the sale of the Tulley VW dealership of Nashua to the AutoFair Automotive Group of Manchester.

The Tulley family will continue to operate dealerships at 147 Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua and at 170 Auto Center Road in Manchester, selling BMW, Mazda, Buick and GMC automobiles.

AutoFair will acquire the VW dealership and move it to a new location at 717 Route 101A in Merrimack, across from Nashua Harley-Davidson, at a site formerly occupied by a used car dealer, effective Jan. 2, according to Andy Crews, CEO and owner of AutoFair Automotive Group.

"One of the reasons we chose this location is that it is beside the Harley-Davidson dealership and was formerly an automotive use," said Crews, "so for zoning requirements, it was already zoned automotive, allowing for an easy transition."

Work has been under way to prepare for the opening, he said, with a major remodeling to follow. "We are going to go ahead and open it up immediately, starting on Jan. 2," he said, "and will stay in business throughout the construction. The service department will be open to service all the current Volkswagens in operation in the market."

The new VW location joins an AutoFair organization that includes dealerships in Manchester and Stratham in New Hampshire, and Plymouth and Tewksbury in Massachusetts. AutoFair was purchased by Crews in 2006.

The company sells new Ford, Honda and Hyundai cars at Manchester locations; Nissans in Tewksbury and Stratham; and Hondas in Plymouth.

AutoFair also operates a used car dealership and a collision center in Manchester.

Crews said a handful of Tulley employees who specialized in the VW business will make the transition to the AutoFair organization, but approximately 20 new employees will be hired in various jobs to staff the new VW location.

The Tulley family has operated auto dealerships in Nashua for generations, is active in the community and well-regarded in the automotive industry.

"We've had a very strong relationship with the family for a very long period," Crews said. "They have done such a great job of taking care of their customers. We hope we can build on that in the Nashua market."

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
