Branden Gracel's power-play goal 15 seconds into the third period guided the University of Massachusetts to a 3-2 men's hockey victory over No. 8 Dartmouth College on Monday for the 2012 Ledyard Classic at Thompson Arena.

Before a crowd of 3,182, the Minutemen handed the Big Green their first loss at home in eight games this year. In Sunday's semifinals, Dartmouth defeated in-state rival New Hampshire 4-1. That win enabled the Big Green to move up two spots in the weekly Division I USCHO.com national poll.

The Big Green dropped to 8-3-2, while Massachusetts improved to 7-9-2. In all, 23 penalties were called, totaling 87 minutes. The penalties included two game misconducts (one aside), three five-minute majors and four 10-minute misconducts.

UMass had 11 power-play opportunities, scoring twice against the No. 1 penalty killing unit in the nation.

Dartmouth was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Sophomore Brett Patterson scored a shorthanded goal 9:50 into the first period to tie the game at 1-1 after Conor Sheary had given the visitors the early lead with a power-play tally.

Dartmouth grabbed a 2-1 lead at the 11:13 mark of the second period when Dustin Walsh beat UMass goalie Kevin Boyle over the shoulder with a wrist shot.

In the second period, a shorthanded goal from UMass' Eddie Olczyk, son of the former NHLer by the same name, at 9:50 tied the game at 2-2.

Cab Morris, who was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week, stopped 26 shots. He established a career-high 31 saves on Sunday against UNH. Boyle turned aside 26 Dartmouth shots Monday, earning Goaltender of the Tournament honors.

Gracel was named the tournament MVP, while Mike Keenan and Tyler Sikura represented the Big Green on the all-tournament team.

The Big Green return to ECAC action Friday at No. 5 Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. The game will be on NESN at 7 p.m.

Women's basketball

Keene State 58, Colby College 57: On Tuesday in the consolation game of the KSC Holiday Tournament, Christan Wojtas of Amherst hit a three-pointer with 13.4 seconds left to give the Owls (4-6) the non-conference win.

After a Colby time-out, senior Diana Manduca missed a short jumper in the lane. KSC freshman Kesley Cognetta got the rebound and ran out the clock, allowing the Owls to preserve the win.
