HOOKSETT - If the defending Division I champs needed a wake-up call, they got it on Saturday.

After being pushed around by a physical Concord squad in the first period, the Pinkerton Academy of Derry hockey team scored three times in the first five minutes of the second to pull away from the Crimson Tide for a 5-1 win at the Ice Den.

"We had a big push to start the second period, that was key," Pinkerton coach Casey Kesselring said. "We jumped on them, got a couple of goals and I think (goalie) Matt Marchman was the difference after that."

The Astros evened out their record at 3-3 with the win, while Concord dropped its second straight after being undefeated over the first three games and is now 2-2-1.

The three losses for Pinkerton have come against opponents with a combined two losses between them, Manchester Memorial, Manchester Central and Salem. The Astros figure to be in the playoffs once again, and in the second period they showed why by scoring with three of their seven shots.

Jake Veilleux broke a 1-1 tie at the 2:01 mark of the second when he took advantage of a turnover by the Concord defense in its own zone and beat goalie Benjamin Nelson (15 saves) for what turned out to be the eventual game winner.

Next up was the Corsetto brothers, senior Dominic and sophomore Giovanni, who connected on a give-and-go to make it 3-1 with 11:55 left in the second.

Dominic started the play with a pass to Giovanni, who quickly hit his older brother cutting to the net for the score.

"We've done that a million times on the pond," Dominic Corsetto said. "We're two years apart, we room together every day so we've got good chemistry."

The last to score in the run was Connor Brady, who also had the lone goal for the Astros in the first period, to make it 4-1 with 10:01 remaining in the second. Both of his goals came on the power play, where Pinkerton was 2-for-3.

Pinkerton's second line of Brady, Max Campbell and Tyler Poole set the pace for the offense with a combined six points. Brady had two goals and an assist, Campbell scored the final goal of the game with 8:36 left in the third and Poole had two helpers.

"Brady is tough to move on the power play," Kesselring said. "We put him in front of the net, he's a big kid and he banged in a couple."

It was 4-1 after two periods of play and that was more than enough of a cushion for Astro goalie Matt Marchman, who finished with 36 saves. He was really tested in the first and second periods, when he made 28 of his 36 saves.

Austin Erickson had the goal for Concord, which put the Crimson Tide up 1-0 at the 4:49 mark of the first period.

Timothy Weinhold won a face off in the circle to the left of Marchman and the puck went to Braden Smith. Smith headed for the back of the net, but before he got there sent a pass out front to Erickson, who one-timed a shot by Marchman.

The senior goalie was solid after that.

"If we play the way we can," Dominic Corsetto said. "I think we can play with any team."
