College Sports Roundup: SNHU men surge past UMass Lowell

Freshman Rodney Sanders led four Southern New Hampshire University players in double figures with 19 points in a 69-63 Northeast-10 men's basketball win over UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse in Manchester.

The Penmen won their third straight to improve to 8-3 and 4-3 in the NE-10, while the River Hawks are also 8-3 and 4-3.

Sanders was 7-10 from the floor. Aleksandar Dobrovic and Hooksett's Mike Stys each scored 16 points and B.J. Cardarelli added 13 points.

Antonio Bivins led UMass with 23 points.

In a game that featured nine lead changes and eight ties, Southern New Hampshire used a late 8-0 run to take control. The Penmen took the lead for good with 3:44 left on a fast-break layup by Sanders that made it 56-55. Dobrovic capped the run with a basket at the 1:05 mark to give the Penmen a 62-55 lead. The hosts sealed the victory by going 7-8 at the free throw line in the final 43 seconds.

Franklin Pierce 70, St. Michael's 68: The No. 10 Ravens improved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the NE-10. St. Mike's is 4-7 and 1-6. The victory for FPU was the 750th in program history.

Senior guard Eric Jean-Guillaume tossed in a game-high 18 points including a trio of three-pointers.

One of his triples aided a 9-2 run by the Ravens who went from a six-point deficit to a 60-59 lead with 3:37 remaining in the game. Jean-Guillaume netted 13 of his 18 points in the second half.

The score was tied 65-65 with :59 left. Jean-Guillaume gave the Ravens a lead with a foul line jumper.

St. Mike's turned the ball over and Jean-Guillaume drew a foul and converted a free throw to push the Ravens lead three. Ryen Vilmont added two more free throws and St. Mike's hit a three in the final seconds to account for the final score.

NHTI 86, Berkeley (NY) 83: Ahntwan Harris had 22 points and eight rebounds and Jackson Riel of Pembroke hit for 22 points with six rebounds as NHTI won the championship game of its own New Year's Invitational Tournament in Concord on Sunday. NHTI is now 15-1. Manchester's Besfort Syla added 14 points for the winners.

Women's basketball

UMass Lowell 96, SNHU 82:
Bianca Simmons hit for 32 points to lead a big offensive output for UML on Sunday in Manchester. The River Hawks improve to 7-4 and 4-3 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Penmen are now 5-6 and 2-5 in the league.

Senior Michelle DeRoma recorded a career-best 23 points, going 5-8 behind the three-point arc, to lead three players in double figures for Southern New Hampshire. With her five threes, she now has 123 for her Penmen career, moving her past Jen Ryan and into fourth place on the SNHU career list. Sloane Sorrell had 12 points, while Victoria Wiseman added 11.

Dartmouth 57, UMass 55: Tia Dawson had 12 points and 13 rebounds to help the Big Green snap a 12-game losing streak in Amherst, Mass., Sunday afternoon.

Faziah Steen had 11 points and Daisy Jordan 10 for the Penmen.

Dartmouth went 17-for-18 from the free throw line down the stretch to gain its winning margin.

Dartmouth is 2-12 and UMass is 3-12.

Berkeley (NY) 65, NHTI 54: Janay Thomas had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead Berkeley to a win in the finals of the NHTI New Year Invitational Tournament on Sunday in Concord.

NHTI (9-5) was paced by Northwood's Allura LeBlanc who had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Bristol's Jordan Phinney who collected 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Men's hockey

Becker 7, SNHU 4:
The Penmen dropped to 2-9-2 on the season with a loss on Sunday in the DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic in Winooski, Vt. Becker is 7-6.

Steven Berry had two goals for SNHU while Jim Gabrione and Connor Audycki had the other goals.

Penmen goalie Tyler Holske recorded 23 saves in net.

Gymnastics

UNH 194.850, Rutgers 192.800:
Austyn Fobes notched a personal-best all-around score of 39.425 to UNH grab a season opening East Atlancit Gymnastics League win on Sunday.

Fobes had the meet's top score on vault (9.850) and uneven bars (9.875). She tied for the top mark on floor exercise (9.875).
