Meredith selectmen reject 'hazard elimination' proposal

MEREDITH - The board of selectmen has rejected a proposal from the state and federal government for improvements to the railroad crossing near the town beach at Lake Waukewan because they don't see the point of it.

"I think the board felt it was federal money wanting to be spent, and we weren't sure why it was needed," said Selectman Carla Horne.

Officials from the state's Department of Transportation, partnering with the state's Transportation Improvement Program and their federal counterparts, approached the town recently with a hazard elimination proposal citing safety issues at the crossing.

The proposal would cost $350,000, but the town would only have to pay $20,000 of that cost, Horne said.

The government also said the crossing was "100 percent eligible" for hazard elimination equipment, such as crossing lights and bars.

In its writings to the town on the matter, state officials said they would present a fully detailed presentation of the work involved at a future point, before the town would have to make a decision on the plan.

But board members said there was not enough information about what the project would entail, and there was no apparent need for the spending.

The crossing at the beach has not been a problem, town officials said.

"There's been no problems there that I'm aware of," Horne said.

So the board voted to dismiss the proposal.
