NHIAA Roundup: Tough first period does in West skaters

The Manchester West High School boys hockey team skated through a forgettable first period Wednesday.

The Blue Knights surrendered five first-period goals en route to an 8-2 loss to Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough at the JFK Coliseum.

"We definitely got off to a rough start," West coach Matt Thompson said. "Tough to recover from that."

Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough received four goals from Tim Casey, three from Chris Brown and one from Nick Shute. Shute also collected three assists.

West trailed 5-0 after one period, and 8-1 after two.

Zach Allard and Noah Cote scored for the Blue Knights. West's Patrick Patient, a freshman forward, played in his first varsity hockey game and was credited with an assist on Cote's goal.

The victory raised Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough's Division III record to 4-2. West dropped to 1-6.

Josh Gagne (11 saves) and Eric Clark (eight saves) split time in net for West. Connor O'Neil made 20 saves for Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough.

Merrimack 6, Pelham 1: At Manchester's West Side Arena, Merrimack raised its regular-season record to 7-0 behind two goals and three assists from Connor Powell. Dom Valluzzi added one goal and two assists, and Josh Roy had one goal and one assist. Tyler Brewster and Mark Feeney (power play goal, assist) also lit the lamp for Merrimack, which has allowed five goals in seven games. Porter Caselli tallied the lone goal for Pelham (3-3-1). Merrimack goalie Brett Glendye had 23 saves and Pelham netminder Mike Donovan turned back 42 shots.

Trinity 6, Nashua North 3: At Conway Arena in Nashua, Trinity broke open a close game with three third-period goals to improve to 4-3. Josh Beaumont (goal, two assists), Kyle Valliere (goal, two assists), Drew Merrick (goal, assist) and Robert Lavine (two assists) led the way. North (1-6) got goals from Adam Murphy, Jack Latham and Tim Paige.

Hanover 1, Pinkerton 0: At Hooksett, Joe Cravero scored the game's only goal with 1:02 remaining in the third period as Hanover raised its Division I record to 3-2-2. James Montgomery made 21 saves for the Marauders. Nate Mitchell stopped 22 shots for the Astros, who fell to 3-4.

Goffstown 7, Timberlane 1: On Wednesday at Salem's ICenter, Andrew Chretien scored a career single game high five goals to lead Goffstown (5-2) to its fifth straight win. Tyler Grinley and Connor Easton also scored in the win. Timberlane falls to 0-7.

Salem 7, St. Thomas 2: At Dover, Nick Soucy scored three goals to help Salem raise its Division I record to 5-1-1. The Blue Devils led 3-1 after one period and 5-2 entering the third. Salem goaltender Nick Phair made 18 saves. St. Thomas fell to 4-2-1 with the loss.

Bedford 1, Oyster River 1: At Durham, Bedford moved its Division II record to 5-1-1 with this tie at the Whittemore Center. Oyster River is now 2-2-3.

Londonderry 2, Bishop Guertin 0: At Salem, Londonderry scored in each of the final two periods and stretched its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2). Eric Coburn and Brett Evangelista scored the Londonderry goals. The Lancers improved their Division I record to 4-1-2.

BG, which was shut out for the first time this season, dropped to 4-2-1. Londonderry goaltender Joe McGrath made 17 saves.



Girls' hockey



Bishop Brady-Trinity 9, ConVal 0: In Winchendon, Mass., Stephanie Snow scored three goals to lead Bishop Brady-Trinity (2-5) to the shutout win. Arianna Harris, Colleen Earley, Stephanie Sloane and Melissa Houde (two goals) each scored during a six-goal first period spree. Kerry Twomey had one goal and one assist.



Boys' basketball



Derryfield 55, Sunapee 38: In Manchester, Tyler Zorn tallied 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter, when the Cougars (5-1) pulled away. Zorn and Bennett Doherty each had two 3-point field goals. Doherty had 10 points, and Max Anderson (10 rebounds) and Roger Larrivee (seven rebounds) controlled the boards. Noah Sharin of Sunapee (1-3) led all scorers with 17 points. Teammate James Fitzgerald added 10.
