College Sports Roundup: SNHU men top Le Moyne

The Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team improved to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10 with a 64-58 win over Le Moyne in Syracuse, N.Y. Wednesday night.

The Penmen got a balanced scoring attack as nine players reached the scoring column. B.J. Cardelli led the way with 16 points, Rodney Sanders poured in 11 and Aleksander Dobrovic added 12 off the bench. Jim Janson scored a game-high 21 for Le Moyne (7-4, 4-3).

Men's basketball

St. Anselm 88, St. Rose 78: At Albany, N.Y., five players reached double figures in scoring to lead the Hawks (10-2 overall, 6-2 Northeast-10).

Chris Santo scored a team-high 21 off the bench for St. Anselm and Mike McCahey (17), Roy Mabrey (15), Dominic Borelli (11) and Dino Mallios (11) chipped in. Dominykas Milka scored a game-high 26 for St. Rose (7-4, 4-4).

UMBC 68, Univ. of New Hampshire 57: At Baltimore, junior Patrick Konan scored a team-high 19 points, but UNH was defeated in America East play and dropped to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in league play. UMBC improved to 3-13, 1-2.

Southern Conn. State 68, Franklin Pierce 65: At New Haven, Conn., the 10th-ranked Ravens fell despite 19 points each from Adrianos Vourliotakis Perdikaris and Ellis Cooper. FPC is now 9-3, 6-2 in the Northeast-10.

Women's basketball

Univ. of New Hampshire 62, UMBC 62: At Durham, Morgan Frame scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season as UNH downed the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in America East action.

Southern New Hampshire 68, Le Moyne 50: At Syracuse, N.Y., Sloane Sorrell totaled a season-best 24 points and a career high 17 rebounds to lead SNHU to a Northeast-10 women's basketball victory Wednesday night.

The Penmen evened their overall record at 6-6 and improved to 3-5 in the NE-10 while the Dolphins are now 4-8 and 2-6 in the league.

Franklin Pierce 83, Southern Conn. State 68: At New Haven, Conn., the Ravens pulled away in the second half to improve to 8-4. Kara Charette scored a game-high 22 points to lead FPC and Tiffany Johnson added 16.

St. Rose 63, St. Anselm 54: At Albany, N.Y., St. Rose broke away in the second half to post a win over the visiting Hawks (4-8). The game was close at the half, with St. Rose ahead 32-20. Ashley Viselli scored 12 to lead St. Anselm.

Honors

Southern New Hampshire: Two SNHU baseball players were named preseason All-Americans by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Senior shortstop Matt Boulter and junior pitcher Alex Powers were tabbed.

Boulter was one of two players to start all 58 games for the Penmen in 2012. He batted .299 with a single-season school record 52 runs batted in en route to ABCA Second Team All-Region and Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference honors.

Powers, who served as the Penmen closer in 2012, was a Daktronics Honorable Mention All-American as well as a Daktronics and NCBWA First Team All-Region selection last spring. The righthander recorded 48 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work and registered a 1.52 earned run average to go along with a 5-2 record and eight saves.

University of New Hampshire: Wildcat senior Nordic skier Liz Guiney was named to the United States Ski Team for the U23 World Championships, which will take place in Liberec, Czech Republic, later this month.
