Posthumous medals for WWII veteran

MANCHESTER - A former Army corporal who worked on military automobiles during World War II was awarded four medals posthumously, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.

Shaheen recognized the service of deceased Manchester resident George Giotas. Family received the good conduct medal and the World War II victory medal.

Giotas enlisted into the Army in September 1942 at the age of 21. He learned automobile maintenance in Arizona, and he was sent overseas in 1944, where he served one year, five months and 17 days in Italy and Greece.

His main duty was to repair and maintain all types of gasoline powered automotive vehicles. He earned several promotions and was discharged from the Army in April 1946 with the rank of corporal.
