Former Cheshire County Attorney arrested for DWI

SULLIVAN -- Former Cheshire County Attorney Peter Heed was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Route 9 Thursday night.

"I sincerely regret any error I many have made and I will address it in a straightforward way," Heed said Friday, declining to comment further.

Thursday around 11 p.m. State Police Troop C received a report of an erratic driver on Route 9 in Sullivan headed west towards Keene, according to a state police dispatcher on Friday.
As a result Heed was charged with DWI. He was released on bail and has a Jan. 23 court date.

Heed had been reelected as Cheshire County Attorney in November, but resigned a month later saying he was retiring from public office to work for a private firm.
Heed said he planned to join Abramson, Brown and Dugan, a private Manchester law practice known for representing plaintiffs? in medical malpractice cases.
Heed, who lives with his wife in Westmoreland just outside of Keene, said the plan was for the law firm to establish a Keene office that Heed would run.

Heed started his career in homicide prosecution for the N.H. Attorney General'?s office in the 1970s.
In 1980 he moved to the Keene area to enter private practice.
After almost 20 years in the private sector Heed ran for Cheshire County Attorney in 1999 and won. He served from 2000 to 2003 when he became N.H. Attorney General.

Heed resigned as Attorney General in 2004 and had served as Cheshire County Attorney since 2006.
