A new record high temperature for the month of January was set atop New England's tallest peak yesterday.

Meteorologist Mike Kistner at the National Weather Service offices in Gray. Maine said weather observer Mike Carmon reported that thermometers at the Mount Washington observatory registered 48 degrees Sunday at 6 a.m., topping the previous January record high of 47 degrees, set on January 19, 1995.

Kistner said mild weather should continue across New Hampshire today, with a cold front moving through around midday to help clear out clouds and any leftover dense fog, allowing sunshine to spread across the state. Kistner said temperatures should remain seasonable, in the 30s and 40s, through much of the work week, before a burst of Arctic cold arrives Friday and into next weekend.
