NH unemployment rate up to 5.7 percent
New Hampshire's preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December was 5.7 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the November rate, which remained at 5.6 percent after revision, New Hampshire Employment Security announced Tuesday. The December 2011 seasonally adjusted rate was 5.2 percent.
The number of employed residents in December 2012 was 698,430, an increase of 350 from the previous month and a decrease of 4,470 from December 2011. The number of unemployed residents increased by 430 over the month to 42,030 - 3,520 more than in December 2011.
From November to December 2012, the total labor force increased by 780 to 740,460, a decrease of 950 from December 2011.
Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2012 was 7.8 percent, unchanged from November and a decrease of 0.7 percentage points from the December 2011 rate.
Dyn hires former Carbonite CFO
MANCHESTER - Dyn, an Internet services company with offices on Dow Street, announced that Andrew Keenan has joined the company as chief financial officer.
Keenan was most recently CFO of Carbonite, an online backup storage provider. After joining Carbonite in 2007, he helped guide the company through a period of explosive growth while overseeing all financial, legal, HR and facilities functions.
In August 2011, he completed an initial public offering.
Keenan has held CFO and other senior financial positions at various companies for more than 25 years. Much of that time was spent leading technology companies through various stages of growth and development, including three successful IPOs and several exits-through-sale transactions.
In 2010, Keenan was named the Boston Business Journal CFO of the Year.
Prior to joining Carbonite, he was CFO of Vovici, an online survey management and enterprise feedback solutions firm.
He also served as CFO of Silver Oak Solutions, where he managed the company's sale to CGI Group.
Nashua workshop to focus on e-commerce
NASHUA - "Growing Your e-Commerce Business" is the topic of a conference scheduled for Friday at Nashua Community College, 505 Amherst St.
The event, hosted by the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center, offers informative and timely topics for online retailers, including advice on shipping solutions, accepting credit cards, increasing online presence, cyber threats, creating videos and product photos, and building brand across online and in-person environments.
Special Agent Timothy Russell, of the FBI Boston office, will address a general session on cyber threats and emerging concerns, in a talk focused on threats that the FBI views as a concern for its area of responsibility in New England. Jeff Baker from Image4 will present at the second general session on how to keep your brand from sinking into irrelevance in the online global marketplace.
Workshops include Growing Your Online Presence, Leveraging Broadband for Small Businesses, Opening an e-Commerce Store and Shipping Solutions for Online Businesses.
The conference, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is sponsored by Citizens Bank Foundation, UNH Cooperative Extension and the New Hampshire Broadband Mapping & Planning Program. Registration costs $85 and includes coffee and lunch.

Facebook unveils search feature
MENLO PARK, Calif. - Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Tuesday a feature to help its users search for people and places within the social network, in the company's first major product launch since its May initial public offering.
Speaking to reporters at his company's headquarters, Zuckerberg revealed "graph search," which allows users to sort through only content that has been shared with them - addressing potential privacy concerns.?Available as a beta or early version to hundreds of thousands of users now, the new feature - dubbed "graph search" because Facebook refers to its growing content, data and membership as the "social graph" - will initially let users browse mainly photographs, people, places and members' interests, he added.?Facebook may explore ways to earn revenue off of the service in the future, he added.
