Manchester woman says assault was in self-defense

MANCHESTER - A city woman pleaded innocent Tuesday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division to a simple assault charge that accuses her of punching her boyfriend around the neck and head while in the area of McGregor Square on Monday.

But Ann Polichronopoulos, 51, of 64 Eastwind Drive, told Judge William Lyons: "I was getting strangled in a car. I only hit him to get away."

Trial was set for March 28 and bail was continued at $1,000 personal recognizance, with conditions barring contact with the alleged victim and barring Polichronopoulos from his residence.

Will defend herself

Tanya Bemis, 25, of 328 Merrimack St., pleaded innocent Tuesday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division to two simple assault charges that allege she threw a picture frame at her boyfriend, hitting him above the left eye, and punched him numerous times.

Bemis declined to apply for a court-appointed lawyer, saying she would represent herself. Trial was set for March 28 and bail was continued at $1,000 personal recognizance, with conditions barring contact with the alleged victim and barring Bemis from the Merrimack Street address.

Bail revocation sought

A bail revocation hearing is scheduled for this morning in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division for a Pembroke woman who was out on bail on an assault charge when she allegedly stalked her victim.

Miranda Clark, 27, of 29 Donna Drive, is accused of being with her boyfriend early Tuesday at his Manchester residence, despite bail conditions barring contact.

Clark is scheduled for trial Jan. 31 on the original charge, but to allow preparation for trial on the stalking charge, a March 7 trial date was set.

Charges in two states

Gary Hardaway, 20, who listed the homeless shelter as his address, was arraigned Tuesday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division on a felony fugitive charge.

Massachusetts wants Hardaway back for prosecution on a motor vehicle theft charge from Dec. 5, 2012, but he declined to waive extradition.

Police prosecutor Carissa Pelletier said Hardaway has a receiving stolen property charge pending here, scheduled for trial March 13.

Pelletier requested $15,000 cash/surety bail on the fugitive charge and a hearing was set for Feb. 14.
