Luke Bonner has taken a stand for his big brother, spawning a movement. "Let Matt Shoot."
In an open letter to the NBA, the youngest Bonner makes a case for veteran Spurs forward Matt Bonner to be selected for the 3-Point Shootout on All-Star weekend in Houston. The letter is loaded with facts, sprinkled with humor, and beginning to gain momentum.
The letter, posted at flipcollective.com, inspired an on-line petition and a Facebook page created by Bishop Brady of Concord graduate Marshall Crane. Luke began writing the piece after having a conversation with a musician from an indie rock band, The War on Drugs, who asked, "Why don't they let Matt shoot in the 3-point contest?"
Luke posted the blog. Social media has taken care of the rest. The Facebook page soon had more that 1,000 "Likes," and Gov. Maggie Hassan was among those Tweeting for Matt.
"I thought Matt might be embarrassed, but I don't think he has ever seen Twitter or Facebook in his entire life," Luke said. "I didn't think anything would really come of it, but it's getting a lot of attention. Who knows if it will actually cause anything to happen?"
The letter reminds the NBA how the Red Rocket is among the most accurate 3-point shooters each season. The elder Bonner ranks 12th in NBA history with a 41.7 percentage from long range. It's a solid argument, and if that's not enough to keep you reading, Luke describes how his older brother is a marketable player for the NBA's All-Star festivities.
Luke writes, "In a league with an abundance of players wearing fluorescent sneakers and nonprescription post-game glasses, Matt manages to differentiate himself. By playing in New Balance sneakers and wearing post-game corduroy jackets, he has developed his own easily recognizable personal brand and stands out more than most."
