College Sports Roundup: St. Anselm men's hoopsters fall short

Dino Mallios registered his third career double-double and Roy Mabrey poured in 26 points, but the St. Anselm men's basketball team's second-half rally fell short as 23rd-ranked Assumption held on for a 95-89 victory in Worcester Saturday.

The loss snapped the Hawks' seven-game win streak. St. Anselm is 12-3 overall and 8-3 in the NE-10. The Greyhounds are 13-2 and 10-1.

Mallios matched his career high with 18 points and posted a career-best 12 assists. Mike McCahey netted 18 points and Chris Santo added 10.

St. Anselm trailed by 21, 74-53, with 9:03 remaining before initiating its late-game rally. A pair of McCahey threes sandwiched a burst that trimmed the Hawks deficit to 78-67 with 5:41 left. Two baskets by Mabrey and buckets by Santo and McCahey pulled St. Anselm to within six, 86-80 with 1:16 to play, and two Mallios free throws brought the locals to within four, 91-87, with 32 seconds left.

New Haven 75, Southern New Hampshire 60: At West Haven, Conn., Elijah Bonsignore, playing in his first game since Dec. 15, led the Penmen (6-5 NE-10) with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Rodney Sanders added 14 points and Mike Stys of Hooksett scored 12 points. SNHU led 49-46 with 12 minutes to play, but New Haven closed the game with a 29-11 run.

Franklin Pierce 67, Adelphi 51: At Garden City, N.Y., Adrianos Vourliotakis Perdikaris scored 15 points and reserve Andre Blackwood added 10 as the Ravens improved to 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the NE-10.

Boston University 69, New Hampshire 59: At Durham, the Wildcats fell behind by seven points, 31-24, at the half and struggled to rally. Chandler Rhoads led UNH with 16 points while Chris Matagrano and Freg Myrick added 14 points apiece.

Keene State 89, UMass-Dartmouth 60: At Keene, the Owls burst to a 38-22 halftime lead and upped their LEC record to 4-2. Anthony Mariano came off the bench to tally 25 points. Eric Fazio, Ryan Martin and Montel Walcott also managed double figures.

Rhode Island College 57, Plymouth State 54: At Plymouth, Sheldon Benson and Petey Skevas scored 17 and 11 points each for the Panthers who are 1-5 in the Little East. A Benson three-pointer pulled PSU to 55-52 with 1:01 to play.

Colby-Sawyer 88, New England College 61: At Henniker, Wol Majong led four Chargers in double figures with 18 points. Abdirahman Mohamed scored 20 for the Pilgrims.

Daniel Webster 78, Mitchell 67: At Nashua, Daris Cosby banked in 30 points including a half dozen three-pointers for the Eagles.

Rivier 60, Norwich 46: At Nashua, Bow's Tom Poitras sparked the Raiders with a 22-point performance.

NHTI 87, Massasoit CC 81: At Concord, Jackson Riel of Pembroke, Besfort Syla of Manchester and Ahntwan Harris (12 rebounds) scored 24, 23 and 16 points apiece for the 20-1 Lynx who are the top-ranked team in the USCAA Division II.



Men's Ice Hockey



St. Anselm 3, Babson 2: At Goffstown, Hawks Liam McKillop, Joe Tebano and Sean Jenkins scored middle period goals.

Assumption 3, Southern New Hampshire 2 (OT): At Hooksett, the Greyhounds Keven Meehan scored the game-winner 3:21 into overtime. Assumption led 2-0 before the Penmen tied the game with goals from John Humphrey and Charles Wisniewski.
Women's Basketball

SNHU 72, New Haven: Sloane Sorrell scored 25 points including the game's final three as Southern New Hampshire University rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to stun the University of New Haven, 72-71, in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday at West Haven, Conn. Sorrell recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she also grabbed 11 rebounds. Michelle DeRoma (four threes) and Victoria Wiseman each added 14 points.


SNHU (5-6 NE-10), which trailed 58-43 with 10:25 remaining and 68-56 with five minutes left, used a 13-2 run to pull within one, 70-69, with just over a minute to go following a pair of Wiseman free throws. As time dwindled, Sorrell converted a layup with three seconds remaining to tie the game at 71-71. She then stole the subsequent inbounds pass, was fouled and made one free throw to decide the game.


Franklin Pierce 73, Adelphi 71 (OT): At Garden City, N.Y., Tiffany Johnson scored 25 points including four in overtime as the Ravens moved to 8-3 in the NE-10. Kara Charette and Brittany Martelle also hit key baskets during the extra session and closed with 16 and 15 points respectively.


Boston University 55, New Hampshire 53: At Durham, UNH's Cari Reed recorded game-highs in points (22) and rebounds (13) to post her fifth double-double of the season. New Hampshire (1-4 AE) trailed 54-38 with 3:21 remaining before staging a determined late-game rally.


Assumption 57, St. Anselm 44: At Worcester, Dover's Curran Leighton reached the 1,000-point plateau in the Hawks setback. Briana Jones led St. Anselm (1-10 NE-10) with 10 points.


Keene State 71, UMass-Dartmouth 60: At Keene, Siobhan Carnell poured in 34 points to power the Owls to their first LEC win of the season.


Rhode Island College 69, Plymouth State 31: At Plymouth, Krystin Corliss of Loudon led PSU with 13 points and Bry Bennett of Lancaster added eight points and six rebounds off the bench.


Colby-Sawyer 68, New England College 52: At Henniker, the Chargers improved to 9-0 in the NAC behind Taylor DeSanty's 21 points. The Pilgrims, 7-2 in the league, trailed by a point, 31-30, at the half.


Daniel Webster 67, Mitchell 42: At Nashua, Manchester's Ashley Giampetruzzi scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the 5-3 NECC Eagles.


Rivier 90, Norwich 80: At Nashua, Deanna Purcell of Hudson led four Raiders in double-figures with 23 points. Derry's A.J. Guidi added 16.


Women's Ice hockey


New Hampshire 3, Connecticut 1: At Storrs, Conn., Kristina Lavoie, Kristine Horn and Arielle O'Neill provided the offense for the Wildcats.


Dartmouth 2, RPI 2 (OT): At Hanover, first period goals by Sasha Nanji and Sally Komarek gave the Big Green an early 2-0 lead.


St. Anselm 4, Plymouth State 4 (OT): At Plymouth, Kathryn Picarello's early third period goal pulled St. Anselm to the tie. Marisa Zamrock scored twice for PSU.


Holy Cross 2, New England College 1: At Worcester, Mass., NEC's Madyson Moore tied the game at 1-1 on a second period power play.
