Governor Wentworth schools go in-house for new leader
Robertson, 65, joined School Administrative Unit 49 as assistant superintendent in 1992 and was named superintendent in 1998.
In a recent interview, he said he began his career in education as a math teacher and football coach at Exeter High School in 1969. Robertson earned degrees from Keene State College and the University of New Hampshire. He became assistant principal at Exeter High in 1976, and was named business administrator for the Exeter School District in 1980. But his career took an unexpected turn in the early to mid-1980s when he went to work for a real estate and ship salvage company.
After the real estate market took a downturn, Robertson literally went back to school as the SAU 49 assistant superintendent.
Under his tenure, school district voters finally supported a renovation and new construction plan at the Kingwood campus, that included a $43 million overhaul of the middle and high schools, a new Kingswood Arts Center, and the Lakes Regional Technology Center, formerly known as the Region 9 Vocational Center. Robertson is quick to divert credit back to a supportive school board and especially to school district taxpayers who approved the project.
