NASHUA - Following a nationwide search, St. Joseph Healthcare announced on Monday that Dr. Richard Boehler, a California health care executive, will take over as the company's new president and chief executive officer on April 1.

"I am delighted to be joining such a truly special organization," Boehler said in a statement. "St. Joseph Healthcare is well positioned to continue to lead the way in innovative, high quality care for the residents of the region."

Boehler is taking over for former St. Joseph president David Ross, who resigned from his position in August 2012 because of personal family matters.

James Hamill, interim CEO, has been filling the role since Ross' departure and move to Missouri. According to a release, Boehler is a seasoned physician executive with more than 20 years of health care leadership, and his selection was a unanimous decision by the search committee.

Boehler is currently employed at Medeanalytics, a California-based health care software technology company where he serves as chief medical officer for provider solutions. Previously, he served as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., and senior vice president and chief medical officer at Kennedy Health System in Voorhees, N.J.

"Dr. Boehler brings a vision and a level of expertise to the role of president and CEO at St. Joseph Healthcare that is unique among community hospitals," David Lincoln, president and CEO of Covenant Health Systems said in a statement. Boehler began his career as an internal medicine physician in Albany, N.Y., in 1983. He is a graduate of Albany Medical College, and earned his MBA from SUNY Empire State College.

According to a release, Boehler has held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins Medical School, Albany Medical College and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In addition, he was named Best Samaritan in 1999 by Hudson Valley Magazine for his community service to the homeless and chemically addicted.

St. Joe's is a 208-bed acute care community hospital and trauma center with nearly 2,000 employees, according to its website.
