NH college sports roundup: UNH hockey team drops down to fourth in rankings

A one-goal loss to Providence College on Saturday dropped the University of New Hampshire one spot to No. 4 in the weekly USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll released Monday. UNH's 6-5 home loss to the Friars dropped the Wildcats' overall record to 14-5-2. Boston College (14-5-2) also dropped one spot in the poll to No. 3.

Quinnipiac (17-3-3), idle over the weekend, jumped two spots over UNH and Boston College and landed in the No. 2 spot behind the University of Minnesota (17-3-4). The Gophers beat and tied North Dakota in a pair of games over the weekend.

Dartmouth College (10-6-2) dropped one spot in the poll to 12th.

The Big Green beat Brown Friday, but lost to No. 8 ranked Yale Saturday. The Bulldogs jumped up four spots in this week's poll, owning a respectable 11-4-3 mark.

Honors

St. Anselm: Men's basketball player Mike McCahey was selected as the Northeast-10 rookie of the week. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games.

UNH: Sophomore goaltender Jenn Gilligan was named the Hockey East co-Defensive player of the week. Gilligan was 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average. She notched her first season shutout in Sunday's 2-0 win at Connecticut.

Franklin Pierce: Mike Abrams of the men's track and field team was named Northeast-10 Conference Track rookie of the week after he picked up two sprint wins for the Ravens Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational. He finished first in the 60-meter (7.11) and 200-meter (22.88) dashes.

Keene State: The Little East Conference honored five Owls as its of the week: Anthony Mariano (men's basketball) who, off the bench, averaged 21 points in two games; Siobhan Carnell (women's basketball), who averaged 27 points in two games; Diana Pimer (swimmer of week); Brianna Laliberte of Candia (rookie swimmer) and Kelly Gilmore (diver).

Swimming and diving

Plymouth State: In Danbury, Conn., Amy Mulhern captured three individual events in the Panthers' 111-89 win against Western Conn. State University. Mulhern led PSU with victories in the 50-yard backstroke (33.46 seconds), the 100-yard back (1:10.71), and the 50-yard butterfly (32.07).

Delia Foley of Londonderry won the 1,650-yard free (20:36.88) and the 500-yard free (6:02.85). Other Panther winners included Jennifer Samaro of Salem in the 100 fly (1:12.67); and Kelly Merkle of Salem in the 100 free (1:03.20).

UNH: The women's swimming and diving team fell to Boston University Monday, 179-121 in Boston. Winners for UNH included Katie Mann in the breaststroke (1:04.97) while Lauren McCandless took the 200 fly in 2:04.39. Shelli Reed won the 50 free in 24.29. In the 1000-yard free, McCandless placed second in 10:22.49.
