PLAINFIELD – A Cornish woman was killed in a collision on Route 12A Tuesday night, Police Chief Paul Roberts said.
Adele Greenberg, 83, was driving a 1989 Volvo 240 DL wagon north in the southbound lane when she collided with a southbound vehicle, a 1997 Saab 900 driven by Gavin Davis, 51, of Hartland, Vt.
Greenberg, who also lives in New York City, was helping a friend move from New York to her Cornish home at the time of the crash.
A table and other items she was moving came forward at the moment of impact and contributed to the injuries that caused her death, Roberts said.
Davis and his passengers, Patrick Skehan, 57, and his son Rory Skehan, 19, also of Hartland, were on their way home after attending a soccer game at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden.
Police responded around 7:30 p.m.
Greenberg was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis and the Skehans were taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon with non-life threatening injures. The Skehans were released later that night and Davis, who had knee injuries, Wednesday morning.
The crash was witnessed by Greenberg's friend, who was traveling in a car behind Greenberg's Volvo, police said.
Both she and Davis told police the road's center double yellow lines were not visible due to falling snow.
When the collision occurred it had been snowing for 40 minutes.
"The road was white and it appears she lost her orientation because there was no fog line, no center line," Roberts said. "The weather played a significant role.
All the drivers were telling us they were having a hard time orientating on the road."?
The crash remains under investigation.
