House committee recommends killing social media bill

CONCORD - The House Judiciary Committee is recommending killing a bill that would give a deceased person's family control over their Facebook page and other social media and electronic communications sites.

House Bill 116 would give the executor or administrator of an estate control over the social media and electronic communications sites of the deceased.

The bill's prime sponsor, Rep. Peter Sullivan, D-Manchester, had told the committee earlier that the state's privacy and estate laws had not kept up with today's technology and social media sites

But committee members and others expressed concerns about the bill's reach, its conflicts with federal law and if it could be enforced.

The bill is expected to be on the House's agenda Wednesday.
