NH College Sports Roundup: Stys, SNHU knock off Pace

Mike Stys of Hooksett scored the game-winning basket with nine seconds left and sophomore swingman B.J. Cardarelli knocked down nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points as the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team recovered after losing a late lead to nip Pace, 68-67, Wednesday in Pleasantville, N.Y.

The Setters (8-8, 5-7 NE-10) took a 67-66 lead with 24 seconds left, but Stys stepped up at both ends of the court, scoring to put the Penmen (11-5, 7-5) back in front and grabbing a defensive rebound off a Pace miss to preserve the win. Cardarelli was red-hot from long distance, going 9-for-10 from beyond the 3-point stripe.

The Penmen, who were up seven with less than two minutes left, also got 10 points and 11 rebound from Elijah Bonsignore.

Franklin Pierce 79, Assumption 59: At Worcester, Mass., the Ravens (12-4, 9-3 NE-10) made a bid to get back into the poll by knocking off No. 16 Assumption College (13-3, 10-2). FPU moved to within a game of first place by taking a 34-27 lead at the half and gradually pulling away in the second half. Eric Jean-Guillaume led FPU with 21 points, one of four players in double-figures.

St. Anselm 83, Southern Conn. 80: At New Haven. Conn., the dynamic duo of sophomore guard Roy Mabrey (22) and freshman swingman Mike McCahey (20) combined for 42 points as the Hawks (13-3, 9-3 NE-10) held on against the Owls (11-5, 7-5) to move to within a game of first place.

Women's basketball

Pace 50, SNHU 49: At Pleasantville, N.Y., the Penmen (8-8, 5-7 NE-10) failed to score over the final two minutes, setting up a game-winning shot for Jessica Scannell of the Setters (9-7, 7-5) with 21.6 seconds left. Sloane Sorrell led SNHU with 23 points as she moved into fourth place on the program all-time scoring list with 1,323 points.

Southern Conn. 59, St. Anselm 54: At New Haven, Conn., freshman Katie Stopera of Hollis had a career-high 18 points as the Owls (5-10, 2-10 NE-10) handed the Hawks (4-12, 1-11) their seventh straight loss and left them alone in last place in the conference. Curran Leighton of Dover came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points for St. Anselm.

Assumption 79, Franklin Pierce 62: At Worcester, Mass., the Greyhounds (12-4, 9-3 NE-10) used a 10-0 run late in the first half and a strong start in the second half as they snapped a six-game winning streak for the Ravens (11-5, 8-4). Senior forward Amanda Saab of Windham led the Ravens with 13 points).

Hartford 63, UNH 56: At West Hartford, Conn., Kaylee Kilpatrick's career-high 19 points was not enough to stop the Wildcats (6-12, 1-5 America East) from dropping their third straight game. Morgan Frame added 14 points for UNH.

Rivier 67, Simmons 55: At Boston, Mass., sophomore guard Deanna Purcell of Hudson scored the first six points of overtime as the Raiders (11-5, 5-0 GNAC) remained unbeaten in conference play. Purcell finished with a game-high 25 points.

Honors

St. A's goalie collects weekly award: Junior goaltender Nick Dries of St. Anselm was named the ECAC East goalie of the week in men's hockey after back boning the Hawks to a 3-2 win over 14th-ranked Babson College. Dries stopped 30 of 32 shots to up his record to 5-1 for the season.
