GOFFSTOWN - An afternoon house fire Friday afternoon claimed the lives of three cats, fire officials said.

No one was home when the blaze broke out at 163 Wallace Road at about 12:25 p.m., but Goffstown Fire Lieutenant Bill Connor said because a car was inside the home's garage, firefighters had to conduct a search to be sure the home was unoccupied.

Connor said a second alarm was called to provide station coverage, with units from Weare and Bedford providing mutual aid.

The home, which suffered damage a screened in porch on its right side, was not a total loss, Connor said.

Goffstown Police Officer Tom Defosses said at the scene that the fire was contained quickly.

"About 5 minutes after we got here, it blew out the side of the house," Defosses said, "but they had a lot of resources on the scene pretty quickly and they were able to contain it."

No other injuries were reported, and Connor said the cause is still under investigation.
