GREENLAND - About 75 retired military officers and their wives gathered at the Portsmouth Country Club on Saturday afternoon to thank a local organization and a local business that serve to help military personnel and their families.
The Pease Greeters and Wilcox Industries were the recipients of the 2012 Granite State Warriors Award given by the New Hampshire Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Wilcox Industries is based in Newington and for the past 30 years the company has been providing specialized tactical gear for military and law enforcement personnel.
They were honored for their efforts to improve the effectiveness and survivability of the United States military in extreme combat conditions.
The Pease Greeters and the group's chairman, Charles Cove, were honored for their ongoing efforts to welcome all troops passing through Pease International Tradeport, whether coming or going.
The effort was co-founded by Ed Johnson, who was in attendance at Saturday's luncheon.
Members of the Pease Greeters have welcomed more than 500 flights and more than 200,000 troops since its beginning in 2005, and have also shipped 43,000 pounds of care packages to soldiers overseas.
The Granite State Warriors Award was established in 2011 by the MOAA-NH board of directors and is to be given annually to the New Hampshire resident or New Hampshire-based organization making the most significant contributions to the armed forces of the United States.
James W. Teetzel, chief executive officer of Wilcox Industries, said he was honored to receive the award from such a distinguished group of military veterans.
"It's amazing when you consider the caliber of folks within this room and the years of service they've all provided to our country," Teetzel said. "To be bestowed with this honor is very humbling, especially from this group of people."
Retired Navy Commander Bruce Avery serves as the current president of MOAA-NH.
"All of the people (in MOAA-NH) have been on active duty and it's our chance to turn around and say thank you to people and companies that help the military," Avery said.
