College Sports Roundup: UNH women tipped by BU in hockey

No. 5 Boston University used Isabel Menard's second-period power play goal to claim a 3-2 home ice win over the University of New Hampshire in women's ice hockey Sunday afternoon in Boston.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 10-13-2 overall and to 6-6-1 in Hockey East conference play while the Terriers improved to 17-3-3 overall and 12-2-1.

Jenn Gilligan took the loss in the Wildcat goal despite making 27 saves. She is 7-3-1 on the season.

BU led 2-1 after one period. Shannon Stoneburgh and Shannon Doyle scored for the Terriers while Caroline Broderick notched a goal for UNH.

Jessica Hitchcock tied the game 2-2 4:25 into the second period but Menard's goal came at 11:06 to give BU the lead for good.

The Wildcats were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Terriers were 2-for-6 with the advantage.

The team will remain on the road as they travel to Burlington, Vt., to take on the University of Vermont for a pair of games. Friday's puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.

Men's volleyball

Rivier: The Raiders dropped a 3-0 decision to SUNY-New Paltz before upending MIT, 3-0, in their second match of the day. In the MIT match, Chris Markuson and Terrence Matatall each had 12 kills while Aaron Almario added 9 kills and two blocks.

Men's hockey

Dartmouth 5, Clarkson 1: At Hanover, Tyler Sikura, Eric Robinson, Dustin Walsh and Alex Goodship scored third period goals for the No. 12 Big Green Saturday. Dartmouth's offense put 49 shots on goal, its highest figure this season, while the defense allowed only 21 shots to reach netminder Cab Morris.

Assumption 4, Franklin Pierce 3: At Worcester, Mass., Brendan Glynn, Roscoe Sweeney and Brendan McCarron helped the Ravens build a 3-1 lead before the Greyhounds rallied with three goals in the third period Saturday. FPU goalie Pat Dunn was credited with a career-best 47 saves.

Women's basketball

Dartmouth 58, Harvard 45: At Hanover, Nicola Zimmer poured in 18 points and Faziah Steen added 13 as the Big Green opened its home Ivy League slate Saturday. Dartmouth is 3-13, 1-1 in the Ivies.

Skiing

Colby College Carnival: At Carrabasset Valley, Maine, Annika Taylor finished second in the 5K classic Nordic race to lead UNH to its third straight race victory and third place following Saturday's second day of skiing. Taylor's time was 17:43.1. Anya Caldwell Bean of Wolfeboro was seventh in 18:09.9. UNH trails Vermont and Dartmouth, 731-627-584.

Per Lindgren was seventh for the UNH men who finished in fourth place.
University of New Hampshire: The Wildcat women's team finished third overall at the Colby Carnival over the weekend in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

Annika Taylor and Wolfeboro's Anya Caldwell helped the UNH cause by finishing one-two in the 15k freestyle race.

Indoor track

BU Terrier Invitational: At Boston, Mass., Franklin Pierce's Mike Abrams became the first freshman to break 50 seconds this season (49.86) and placed 44th in the 400-meter dash Saturday. He was fourth among NE-10 runners. Concord's Antoine Gisore was 46th overall in the mile in 4:16:88, the sixth-fastest time in the conference this season.

Keene State runners Maggie Fitter (800-meter run) and Ryan Widzgowski (mile) posted New England Champions qualifying times.

Women's swimming

Simmons 166, Plymouth State 97: The Sharks won 13 of the 16 events Sunday afternoon in Boston. Simmons is 8-5 in dual meets this year while PSU is 3-7. Salem's Jennifer Samaro won two events for Plymouth - the 50 breaststroke and the 200 backstroke. Shannon Rogers had the other win for the Panthers in the three-meter diving event. Molly Bohannon and Maddy McDonald won three events apiece for the Sharks. Bohannon captured the 500 and 1000 fresstyle races and the 200 butterfly. McDonald was the top swimmer in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races.

Both teams will compete in the New England Swimming Championships Feb. 8-10 at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Jct., Vt. The New England Diving Championships are Feb. 16-17 at Plymouth State.
