CONCORD - Tonya Rochette has an easy explanation for why she is involved in so many organizations and programs - in addition to being employed full time, a wife and mother of two.

"I love being busy," said Rochette, 38.

Busy hardly describes it. In addition to her job as a vice president of Human Resource Partners, Rochette's volunteer activities include board president of Intown Concord, board vice chair of Concord TV and host of "Non-Profit Connection," steering committee of Concord Young Professionals Network, participant in Leadership New Hampshire, and Capital Area Student Leadership program and Concord Family YMCA volunteer.

She's also volunteers in children's programs, right now running the Mill Brook School ski program, where her son is a student.

While she excels at organizing and planning projects and programs, she is equally happy to be behind the scene. "I just love being able to make things happen and be a part of that."

Rochette started making things happen in high school, active in the Key Club and starting a Rugby Club. "I was always interested in participating," she said. Her goal was meeting needs, giving lessons and helping others succeed.

One of her primary goals now is engaging young people in the nonprofit world, starting as volunteers and working their way to board membership. She organized a capital area nonprofit fair, bringing together 30-plus nonprofits and young professionals who would like to become more involved. "A lot of people are fearful they don't have what a nonprofit needs," she said.

But whether it's nonprofits or business, she said: "It's intimidating to break in." That's why she is very active in the YPN, creating a place where young professionals can meet one another, network and have fun in the process. Among the fun aspects, she said: "We have a softball team and a trivia network."

Rochette worries about what will happen if the exodus of talented young professionals continues. She said New Hampshire businesses and nonprofits will need those people to succeed the retiring Baby Boomers.

She's passing down the importance of engaging in the community and giving back. She likes seeing her children getting the bug and looks forward to seeing where that takes them. Her daughter, a student at Rundlett Middle School, has co-hosted Rochette's television show.

While many of her activities are on her own time, she said she is fortunate enough to work for a woman who believes in community involvement.

There is still one professional goal for Rochette. "I don't have my law degree," she said. She wants to earn that degree at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, conveniently located in Concord.
