Meet 40 who are making a difference
MANCHESTER - Colleen Karpinsky, vice president for talent and legal at Dyn, has clearly made her mark in the Manchester area. She was nominated for the 40 Under Forty class of 2013 by nine different individuals.
Nominations came from the legal profession, utilities, public relations, construction, energy, and of course from her own company, where she presides over a recruiting process that has brought some of the brightest tech talent in the country to the Internet service company with global headquarters on Dow Street.
Her plate would be full enough as the HR executive for one of the fastest-growing companies in the technology sector, but as chief legal officer for Dyn, she also has acquisition and investor issues to deal with. The company's philanthropic arm, DynCares, is also under her wing.
Her list of volunteer activities is endless and her work ethic is legendary among her peers, yet she is no workaholic. Karpinksy is determined to maintain a work-life balance, and somehow, she pulls it off, which is perhaps her most impressive accomplishment.
"When I graduated from Penn State, I was looking to return to the Northeast," said the Delaware native. "My options were, go to Boston and sell my soul to a really large law firm, or go to Manchester where I had connections in the community ... where I could have a better opportunity for a work/life balance."
Although born in Wilmington, she completed her undergraduate studies at St. Anselm College in Manchester before getting her law degree from Penn State. The college connection drew her back to Manchester, where she started her legal career at the McLane law firm.
"I had developed a little bit of a network when I was in college, so I had some connections here that were important to me," she said. "I felt like this was a place where I could come and live and be successful and happy."
In reading through her many nominations, it becomes clear that Karpkinsky's talent and productivity are exceptional, but it's her humanity that shines.
It's all about finding that balance, she said: "Being a well-rounded person is something that benefits you in every aspect of your life."
