Meet 40 who are making a difference
HENNIKER - Jay Hauser lives his life the way his mother Debi taught him. He sees fun in the work it takes to make a dream a reality, excitement in the challenges that life throws his way, and wants nothing more than to give others the same opportunities he's been given.
Hauser, 36, lives in Henniker and works as a senior college counselor at the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation's Center for College Planning in Concord. In his role at the NHHEAF, Hauser helps students navigate the often daunting task of getting into college and assists them on their journey through the murky world of financial aid.
"I love what I do," said Hauser. "Working with students to help them achieve their goals is a fantastic experience."
Hauser has been working in education since he was at school himself. He grew up in Concord and attended the New Hampton School, and it was there that he found himself surrounded by educators and coaches who inspired him to want to follow in their footsteps. Each summer for 10 years he worked at the Sports Plus camp at New Hampton, coaching and mentoring kids not much younger than himself and it became clear that he was meant to be involved with helping others.
"New Hampton is where I fell in love with education and working with kids," Hauser said.
At Rivier College, Hauser combined his interest in education with his love of sports by working in admissions and helping to train the women's soccer team. He also kept close ties with the New Hampton School and worked in admissions there as well, but eventually he found his way to Concord and now tries to reach as many kids as he can through the Center for College Planning, inspiring them with his strong work ethic and his positive attitude.
"I've learned that if you have a dream, you have to make a plan and do the work to make it happen," said Hauser. "The work is the fun part."
And though he just recently lost his mom, Debi, to a battle with brain cancer, the woman he calls his greatest inspiration continues to remind him to celebrate life and the opportunities he's been given.
"My mom was my mentor," he said. "She was an awesome person, always positive, always giving back. She set a good example for me."
