DUNBARTON - After 29 years on the job, Tax Collector Martha Rae will not seek reelection.
"I think a lot of people will be surprised," said Town Administrator Line Comeau of Rae's decision to step down from the post she's held since 1984.
Comeau said Rae has always been easy to work with, providing her with advice and helpful tips, and that when the town purchased new computer software in 2003, Rae dove in headfirst to learn it.
"She took a few support classes, and then taught herself everything else," Comeau said.
Rae, who is also a guidance secretary at Bow High School, said she has no plans to move or travel, but is looking forward to spending some extra time with her family.
"I have grandchildren now, so I'm looking forward to having more time with them," she said.
Rae said she's seen many changes in the tax collector position over the years.
Rae said even the way she is paid has changed.
"I used to get one-half of one percent of everything I collected," she said, as an incentive to collect more in taxes.
Comeau said anyone interested in the elected position has until 5 p.m. Friday to declare candidacy.
