Barrington voters to consider whether to renovate old town hall, budget increase
The deliberative session is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Barrington Middle School on Route 9. Voting will be at the school March 12 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. If approved, Article 14 will appropriate $6,247,168 for the municipal operating budget. It is $314,346 - or 5 percent - larger than last year's budget of $5,932,822. If rejected in March, a default budget of $6,145,056 will be enacted and the town can hold a special meeting to discuss a revised budget.
Article 12 would appropriate a $2,330,000 bond to renovate, construct and equip the Old Town Hall at 137 Ramsdell Lane. A three-fifths majority is required for the article to pass in March. Residents will also consider many capital reserve articles and whether to change the elected position of tax collector to one appointed by selectmen. If approved, the measure would not take effect until the town meeting in 2014.
