Manchester firefighters quickly contain Hanover Street blaze
MANCHESTER — Firefighters quickly contained a fire in a vacant home near the corner of Hanover and Maple streets late Monday.
Deputy Fire Chief Dan Goonan said there were heavy flames when the first trucks arrived shortly before 10 p.m. By 10:15, only a few traces of flames were visible as several trucks continued dousing the multi-family home with water.
"They hit the fire really aggressively and knocked it down quickly," Goonan said.
Smoke continued to drift from the building at 307 Hanover St. as firefighters cut through the roof to make certain that no flames remained.
Goonan said the cause wasn’t immediately clear. He said the building was vacant, although he heard reports that police had chased out squatters earlier Monday.
There were no injuries.
Goonan said investigators were trying to determine who owned the century-old building, which was apparently undergoing renovations. Goonan said there was construction equipment on the second floor.
It was a two-alarm fire, but Goonan said the second alarm was based on the size of the home.
