Free forum in Moultonborough focuses on mental health, suicide prevention

MOULTONBOROUGH - The Moultonborough Coalition for Mental Health and the Prevention of Suicide is hosting a free, brief forum this month intended to provide a road map for depression treatment for local residents.

The forum, entitled "Depression Across the Lifespan," will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Moultonborough Public Library.

Presenter Eve Klotz, the clinical director for Northern Human Services, said the purpose of the forum is two-fold: to educate the community about what services are out there to help deal with mental health, and to address the stigma surrounding mental illness.

"Knowledge is everything. The more we know, the better," she said, adding that mental health is part of one's overall health.

"Mental health is not separate from [physical] health," she said. Knowing where to go is key.

"Access to services is important," she said. Residents will learn where and what resources are available to them to address mental health. She said there are places people can go to get help when they need it, and "and not to feel ashamed about it."

She said depression falls within everyone's circle, whether it be a loved one, friend, or from personal experience.

Presenters at the forum include personnel from Northern Human Services and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-New Hampshire. The experts will engage in a panel discussion with specific presentations on how depressive illness manifests in children, adolescents, adults and elders, and the prevention of suicide across the developmental spectrum.

Specialists will discuss the signs and clinical treatment of depression in children, adult depression and access to NHS Emergency Services, depression in the elderly, and suicide prevention. There will be a question-and-answer period following the presentations.

The coalition is funded by the taxpayers of Moultonborough with support from Lakes Region General Hospital and the Moultonborough Family Health Center.
