NH College Sports Roundup: UNH, Dartmouth drop in hockey polls

The USCHO.com Division I poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine were in a different state of mind when deciding where the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College men's ice hockey teams stood in this week's rankings.

The Wildcats (16-7-2) fell one spot to No. 4 overall in the USCHO.com Division I poll, one position ahead of defending national champion Boston College (15-7-2). Dartmouth College (11-8-3) remained in the top 20, dropping one spot to No. 17.

It's a different picture in the USA Today poll where Boston College is ranked No. 4 ahead of the Wildcats at No. 5. Dartmouth College fell out of the top 15 poll entirely. The Big Green were ranked No. 13 last week.

Both major polls have the University of Minnesota ranked No.1, Quinnipiac No. 2 and Miami at No. 3.

Over the weekend, UNH beat Northeastern on the road 3-1 on Friday, but dropped a 4-1 home decision to Merrimack. Dartmouth's road trek over the weekend produced one point, a 2-2 tie with Union before bowing to RPI, 3-0, on Saturday.

Five points separate top-ranked Boston College (12-6-1, 25 points) in Hockey East from fifth-place Providence with 20 points. UNH is second with 23 points followed by Merrimack (22) and Boston U. (21).

Skiing

St. Anselm College: In Bennington, the men's team finished in fourth place for Saturday's slalom competition and ended fifth overall in the giant slalom Sunday. In Saturday's race, Benjamin Roy had a seventh place overall finish in 1:55.27. Placing 12th was Eric Brandolini of Georges Mills at 1:56.47.

The women's ski team finished in third place for Saturday's slalom competition and ended in second overall Sunday in the giant slalom. Monica Redente led the Hawks Saturday with a two-run total of 1:54.84, good for third place overall.

Baseball

Franklin Pierce: The five-time regional champion has been ranked No. 9 in the nation in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason poll. Junior first baseman Zach Mathieu of Derry, junior outfielder Nick LaCroix and sophomore catcher Matt Walsh were all selected to the preseason All-East Region first team.

Honors

Keene State College: Janel Haggerty was named the Little East Conference women's field athlete of the week. Haggerty won the pentathlon event at the Tufts Stampede track meet in Medford, Mass., on Friday night. Haggerty won the pentathlon with a school record 3,308 points, breaking her previous mark of 3,139 points.

Haggerty won the high jump (5-04.50), the long jump (16-08.50) and the 800 meters (2:26.26). She also placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.54).

St. Anselm College: Freshman Mike McCahey of the men's basketball team was named the Northeast-10 rookie of the week. It's his eighth rookie of the week honor, including the fourth in five weeks and third straight.

Sophomore Tiffany Herron was named ECAC player of the week and junior Lindsey Brown was named goalie of the week by the conference. Herron tallied four points over the weekend including three goals. Brown had 50 saves in two games.
