BRENTWOOD - A man accused of brutally attacking and robbing a man of $80 in a Hampton Falls parking lot bragged to friends that he had been in a fight on the night of the assault and tried to prove it by showing them a bloodied $20 bill, police said in an affidavit.
Bryan A. Lisio, 25, of Hampton, was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail at the Rockingham County jail when he was arraigned Tuesday morning on one count of robbery and two counts of second-degree assault.
Lisio, who has claimed to be a martial arts fighter, was allegedly armed with a gun when he beat and then robbed a 64-year-old man outside the Poker Room on Route 1 in Hampton Falls on Jan. 31. At the time of the robbery, Lisio, a former Poker Room employee, was on probation in Newburyport (Mass.) District Court for violating a restraining order in an unrelated case. His probation was supposed to end March 21, but that could change in the wake of the latest charges.
In a police affidavit, Hampton Falls Detective Peter Fowler provided a detailed account of how the victim tried to fight off his attacker and feared he would be killed. The victim told police that he arrived at the Poker Room around 7 that night to play cards and that when he got out of his vehicle and began to approach the business, a man dressed in black and armed with a handgun came up to him and demanded that he get on his knees and hand over his money.
The victim ran toward the Poker Room, the affidavit said, but the robber caught up to him, grabbed him by his jacket, and dragged him back between two cars where he began hitting the victim in the head with the gun. The victim told police that he struggled with the robber as he attempted to take the gun away from him. He claimed the gun went off several times.
At one point during the attack, the victim said he was strangled and began to black out. He was then dragged backward into a gully between the Poker Room and the Hampton Falls Inn. The victim said he told the robber that he was having a heart attack and would give him the $80 in his wallet.
After the victim handed over the cash, the robber took off. The victim said the robber left behind a black ball cap, which he snatched up as evidence before making his way to the Poker Room to get help. While investigating the scene, police also found blood-stained leaves, handcuffs and a "large quantity" of loose gloves similar to the ones used in the food service industry, according to the affidavit.
The victim was hospitalized with a facial fracture, lacerations to his head, and a left eye injury, the affidavit said.
Based on witness statements and surveillance video taken of the area from the Hampton Falls Inn, police were able to match up the vehicle spotted at the scene to Lisio's Ford Ranger pickup truck. When police spoke with Lisio at his home on Feb. 1, he said he went to Stacey Jane's, a Hampton bar, on the night of Jan. 31.
Fowler said he observed a cut on one of Lisio's fingers as well as swollen knuckles.
A friend told police that Lisio showed up at Stacey Jane's around 11 p.m. on the night of the assault.
"He appeared to be intoxicated and was bragging about having been in a fight in the Hampton area," the affidavit said. Lisio then allegedly showed the friend a $20 bill with blood on it. He also told the friend that "he had left things that would implicate him in the assault at the scene."
The friend also told police that Lisio has a BB gun that looks like a black handgun and handcuffs. Police also learned that Lisio works at a butcher shop in Salisbury, Mass., and that the gloves found at the scene "would be consistent with a person who works in food services of some sort," the affidavit said.
At his video arraignment in the 10th Circuit Court, Brentwood District Division, assistant Rockingham County attorney Jaqueline Docko asked that bail be kept at $50,000 cash.
When Judge Mark Weaver asked if he wanted to comment on the bail, Lisio replied, "It is what it is, sir."
Lisio is due back in court Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. for a probable cause hearing.
