Drug arrests follow hotel guest's call to Manchester police

MANCHESTER - Two people were arrested early Wednesday morning on drug charges after police went to a Front Street hotel for a report of drug activity taking place.

A guest at La Quinta Hotel, 21 Front St., called 911 just after midnight when he overheard a conversation in a neighboring room, leading him to suspect drug activity was taking place.

Officers met with that hotel guest, who told them he heard people saying they couldn't wake up a woman and that she may have overdosed. Police went to the room where they could hear people talking inside the room before they knocked on the door and announced themselves. No one answered the door and, based on information suggesting there was an emergency medical issue inside, they forced the door open.

Inside were two men and a woman. Police said one of the men, identified as Christopher Adler, 27, of 1 Brandywine Drive, Hooksett, struggled with them when they tried to restrain him. Adler allegedly yelled at the officers, causing a general disturbance in the hotel, and they arrested him for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The woman, identified as Amanda Montplaisir, 25, of 527 Wilson St., did not need medical assistance. However, police said she was found in possession of several Clonazepam and Seroquel pills and was subsequently arrested for possession of a narcotic and possession of a controlled drug.

The third man, who police did not identify, was taken into protective custody because of his apparent impairment. Investigators said they collected evidence indicative of drug activity in the room including needles, spoons, baggies and a scale. Additional information gleaned from the investigation indicated Adler was involved in drug sales, according to a police news release of the incident.

Adler was searched when he was booked at the police station, and police said they found 9.5 grams of suspected heroin on him. He was then charged with possession of a narcotic with the intent to distribute and falsifying physical evidence.

At her arraignment later in the morning in 9th Circuit Court, Manchester District Division, Montplaisir sought personal recognizance bail, telling Judge Gregory Michael that she was supposed to enter a drug treatment program Wednesday.

Court documents show she told police who arrested her that the clonazepam and seroquel pills she had in her pocket were to help with expected withdrawal effects in the treatment program in the drug treatment program.

A police prosecutor requested $5,000 cash/surety bail, saying Montplaisir's criminal record includes shoplifting and welfare fraud, and October drug charges were bound over to the Hillsborough County North grand jury.

Michael said he was setting bail at the amount requested by the prosecutor, but would work with Montplaisir's lawyer on a bail that would transition her into an inpatient treatment program.

A probable cause hearing on the felony charge was set for Feb. 19, with status on the misdemeanor.

Adler could enter no plea to the felony charges in Circuit Court, so a probable cause hearing was set for Feb. 20. Trial on the misdemeanor charges was set for March 19.

A police prosecutor requested $10,000 cash/surety bail for Adler, saying he has two previous drug-related convictions. Adler protested, saying: "Two of them were marijuana possession." The judge reminded Adler that marijuana is a drug and set bail at the amount requested by the prosecutor.
