GOFFSTOWN - A quick glove followed by a quick goal was the difference in this one.
Dover goalie Luc Ravenelle robbed Bedford's Brian Collins with a glove save and 13 seconds later Cam Crowley scored a shorthanded goal to give the Green Wave a two-goal lead.
That proved to be the turning point as the Green Wave held on for a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs in a rematch of last year's Division II high school hockey championship at Sullivan Arena on Wednesday.
"No question, that was definitely the turning point for us," said Dover coach Steve Riker. "A shorthanded goal is pretty big. We came out of there with momentum and they didn't."
Dover (8-3-1) scored three unanswered goals in the second period to break a 2-2 tie after one and carry a 5-2 advantage into the final frame.
The Bulldogs (9-2-1) put together a frantic effort in the third and pelted Raven Elle (33 saves) with 20 shots, only one of which they could get by him as they fell short in the heated affair.
"Dover is a good club," Bedford coach Marty Myers said. "They're a good physical club. If you don't bring your physical game they give it to you."
The tensions were high from the opening faceoff and Dover made a statement early with two quick goals by Sean Lombard and Mitchell Welch to go up 2-0 just 2:34 into the game.
Then Bedford responded with two late goals from Cullen Willey and Christopher O'Hara to tie it up 2-2 after one period.
The game was decided in the second period and was the Green Wave that took control.
Ben Henderson gave his team the lead for good when he beat Bedford goalie Stevan Tempesta (15 saves) at 6:41 of the second to make it 3-2, and then Crowley got what ended up being the game winner.
Crowley flew down the ice on a forecheck while the Bulldogs were on the power play and won the puck behind the Bedford net. Crowley then wrapped around front and caught Tempesta off guard when he stuffed the puck between his pad and the post for the score. That made it 4-2 with 6:52 left in the second.
"I forechecked as hard as I could," Crowley said. "I just went in there. The goalie wasn't ready, I turned on net and shot and it went right in."
Less than two minutes later Alec Parmer ripped a bomb from just inside the blue line that beat Tempesta to make it 5-2.
The goal was set up by a rush from Welch, who gained the line and then dumped the puck to Parmer, who was trailing the play.
The Bulldogs were more physical in the third and took over the play. They had the Green Wave on their heels, but Dover managed to kill off two power plays and it wasn't until Bedford pulled its goalie with 2:30 left that it finally surrendered a goal.
Kurt Mitchell scored for the Bulldogs to make it 5-3 with 2:19 remaining, but Bedford couldn't get any closer than that.
"Last year we were pretty close and we came up short," said Dover senior Eli Cobb. "It feels good to come back and get the momentum towards us."
