NHIAA Roundup: Stingy Central passes a big road test
Manchester Central made a strong statement on defense Tuesday night, holding Spaulding of Rochester to 29 points below its season scoring average.
The unbeaten Little Green did not allow Spaulding to score over the final 5:25 of the game en route to a 47-37 Division I boys' basketball victory in the Lilac City. Spaulding (10-2) entered the game averaging 66 points a contest this season, but was held to a season-low 37 points against Central (12-0), which has allowed an average of 48 points a game.
The game was a matchup between the top team and third-best team in Division I.
Dawson Dickson netted 22 points, including five three-point shots, and Troy Pelletier added 17 for the Little Green, which was 13 of 14 from the free throw line. Central was 10 of 10 in the final frame. Pelletier scored 15 of his points in the second half.
The game was tied 30-30 entering the final frame. Spaulding scored the first five points of the fourth period, but Central outscored the Raiders 17-2 the rest of the way.
Manchester Memorial 74, Nashua North 55: At Manchester, Tschiefu Ngalukulondi tossed in 21 points and Zoubel Iradukunda finished with 17 for Memorial (8-3). North (3-8) received a game-high 26 from Jordan Lates.
Salem 45, Londonderry 43: In Londonderry, Salem freshman Matt Vartanian sank a 10-foot jumper from the baseline in the final second. Andrew Ruffen hit three three-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the Blue Devils (4-7). Brand Enwright had 11 points for Londonderry (4-7), while Mike Russel and Cody Ball scored nine points apiece.
Gilford 79, Farmington 55: In Gilford, Josh Joyce scored 28 points including five three-point shots to lead Gilford (12-1). Rich Edson added 13 against Farmington (6-7).
Littleton 61, White Mountains 49: Nick Whipple scored 25 points, and Freddy Vasquez had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Littleton. Josh Bogardus added 12 points for Crusaders (13-1). Ben Rexford buried six 3-pointers and scored 18 points for White Mountains (4-10).
Colebrook 80, Canaan-Pittsburg 52: At Canaan, Vt., Jordan Bedard scored 25 points to lead Colebrook. Jake Scherer sank four three-pointers for 18 points, and Dylan Leach had 15 points for the Mohawks (10-4). Travis Chase poured in 30 points for Canaan-Pittsburg (4-10).
Exeter 65, Nashua South 60: At Exeter, Zach Adler scored 19 points and Tyler Russ finished with 13 as Exeter raised its Division I record to 5-7. Tim Preston scored a game-high 26 for Nashua South (8-3).
Pittsfield 45, Derryfield 42: In the Queen City, the Cougars were 2-of-14 from the charity stripe. Pittsfield (11-2) hit 11-of-20 free throw attempts as the Panthers have beaten the Cougars (9-4) twice this season. Xenthios Cyr led the winners with 15 points and Tyler Booth netted 11. Tyler Zorn led Derryfield with a dozen points.
Profile 60, Groveton 46: At Bethlehem, four players scored in double-digits as Profile picked up its 11th win of the season. Bradford Weeks tallied 15 points to lead the way.
Salem 71, Londonderry 62: In Salem, Brenna Blakslee scored 25 of her 29 points in the second half to lead the Blue Devils 8-5), who scored 50 points in the second half. Blakslee had four of her five three-point field goals in the last quarter as Salem finished the game with a season-high 10 three-point baskets. Allie Sirmaian had 16 points for the Blue Devils including four baskets from three-point land. Casey Evans led Londonderry (9-4) with 19 points.
Manchester Central 57, Spaulding 41: In Manchester, Caitlyn Vincent and Katherine Johnson each scored six points in the third period when Central (4-9) turned an 18-17 halftime lead into a 34-28 advantage. Vincent finished with 14 points and Johnson netted 13. Meg Cleary and Sarah Michaud each had 11 points. Michaud had eight of Central's 23 points in the final frame. Emily Benway had 18 points for Spaulding (4-10).
Windham 63, Goffstown 48: Windham guard Clairee Putnam tallied 24 points as the Jaguars (10-3) were also led by Bernadette Connors (12 points) and Kelsey Schiebel (11 points). Lindsy Poulin scored 13 points, and Alicia Minnich (12 points) hit a pair of three-pointers for Goffstown (9-5).
Merrimack 56, Trinity 48: Kate Cole knocked three triples and had 15 points to lead Merrimack (5-9) on the road. Kathy Petrocelli scored 13 points, and teammate Jo Coffey added 11 for the winners. Lizzy Meehan had 14 points to pace Trinity (4-9) while freshman Ashley Hill chipped in 11 points, including nine points in the second half.
Somersworth 48, Raymond 29: At Raymond, Rachell Hill collected the 1,000th point of her career for 12-3 Somersworth. Hill finished with a game-high 19 points.
Pittsfield 41, Derryfield 23: At Pittsfield, Bekah Adams and Brooke Vien each tossed in 12 points for 11-4 Pittsfield. Hannah Menakaya scored a team-high seven for Derryfield (6-9).
Hanover 6, Bishop Brady/Trinity 0: At Hanover, Eliza Laycock scored twice for 14-0 Hanover. Mattie Hartman had three assists.
