Horse OK after getting stuck on ice in Milton
Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded around 4:50 p.m. to the area of 119 Berry Road, which is near the Wakefield town line, after a large Clydesdale-style horse became stuck on a steep downgrade, according to Fire Lt. Jarrod Wheeler.
Police Lt. Richard Krauss said the ground was icy and the horse slid into a low spot.
"There is a small pond over there, but the horse did not go through the ice," Krauss said. As the horse probably weighs more than 1,000 pounds, Wheeler said it took a dozen people - including six Milton firefighters, five Wakefield firefighters and a Milton police officer - to rescue the animal.
He said the horse appeared to be unharmed, but a local veterinarian responded to check on the animal. "The horse was starting to get cold so we had to take measures to keep it warm," Wheeler said, adding they used heated blankets from the ambulance to protect the horse from the chilly weather.
