Dartmouth, Harvard play to 1-1 tie

Dartmouth scored 9:53 into the first period but then couldn't come up with another in a 1-1 tie with visiting Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., Sunday afternoon. The No. 17 Big Green moved to 7-6-3 in the ECAC and into a three-way tie for third place. They are 11-7-4 overall.

Sophomore Andy Simpson scored the Dartmouth goal with a wrist shot through traffic that beat Raphael Girard (26 saves).

Harvard answered on the power play at 13:03 of the second frame. Marshall Everson got the goal to make it 1-1.

Dartmouth goalie Cab Morris made 21 saves.

St. Anselm 2, New England College 2: Tucker Mullin and Greg Merrill each scored to help the Hawks skate to a tie in Henniker on Sunday.

With the tie, the Hawks moved to 11-8-3 overall and 7-7-2 in the ECAC Men's East conference, while the Pilgrims stand at a 8-12-3 overall and 6-8-2 in league play.

Men's basketball

St. Anselm 75, Bentley 72: Leading by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Hawks had to withstand a Falcon run and needed free throws from Chris Santo, Dino Mallios and Roy Mabrey down the stretch to notch the win.

St. Anselm is 18-3 overall and 14-3 in the NE-10 while Bentley is 7-14 and 5-12.

The Hawks led by three at the halftime break, 40-37. They went on an 18-6 run to start the second half and led 58-43 with 11:01 remaining when John Nielson scored inside.

Bentley refused to fold and pecked away at the deficit until a Joe Glynn layup with 2:57 left gave the Falcons a 65-64 advantage. Santo got a bucket and a free throw to put the Hawks up two but Mike Topercer hit a jumper with 2:19 to play to make it 67-all.

After a couple of scoreless possessions, Santo hit on another lay-up and free throw to put the Hawks up for good 70-67.

SNHU 85, UMass Lowell 73: The Penmen used a 19-4 run late in the second half to pull away from the River Hawks in Lowell, Mass., on Sunday. Both teams are 13-8 overall and 9-8 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Rodney Sanders led four Southern New Hampshire players in double figures with 19 points. Mike Stys of Hooksett added 15 while Elijah Bonsignore added 13 and BJ Cardarelli chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Akeem Williams led all scorers with 24 points for the River Hawks.

Anna Maria 50, Rivier 47: Bow's Tom Poitras led Rivier with 13 points but Anna Maria had enough answers late to get out of Nashua with the victory. Keene's Brian Troy added 11 to the Raiders (10-13) attack.

Cornell 79, Dartmouth 56: The Big Green couldn't get shots to drop on Sunday and struggled through a 16-for-56 performance from the floor in Ithaca, N.Y. Tyler Melville managed to score 12 of Dartmouth's points. Dartmouth is now 6-14 overall and 2-4 in Ivy play.

Women's basketball

UMass Lowell 79, SNHU 62: Lowell turned a three-point halftime deficit into a 17 point win with a strong second half in Lowell, Mass. Bianca Simmons netted 32 points to lead the River Hawks while Manchester's Amra Elozovic added nine points and nine rebounds. Lowell has now won 12 straight and improve to 16-5 overall and 13-4 in the NE-10. SNHU, which was led by Michelle DeRoma's 26 points, drops to 11-10 and 8-9.

Bentley 61, St. Anselm 21: Bentley led 33-13 at the break and held the Hawks (4-17, 1-16) to just eight points in the second half. Bentley is 21-0 and 17-0. Briana Jones led the Hawks with nine points.

Emmanuel 65, Rivier 58: Derry's AJ Guidi scored all 15 of her points in the first half and Deanna Purcell of Hudson scored 11 of her 19 in the second half but the Raiders could not keep up with Emmanuel in the final minutes.

Wrestling

Springfield 41, Plymouth State 6: Alex Cronin of Merrimack won for Plymouth at 133 and Chris Perrault picked up the other Panther win at 184 in Plymouth.

Springfield improved to 12-2 overall.

Baseball

Belmont Abbey 6, St. Anselm 3: James Farrington pitched five strong innings for the Hawks and Mike Hayden drove in a pair of runs but St. Anselm couldn't hang on in the late innings and dropped the first game of the year in Belmont, N.C., Sunday afternoon.

Women's swimming

Dartmouth: The Big Green fell to Columbia on Sunday in Hanover. Olivia Samson won the 1000 free for Dartmouth in 10:14.74 and Kendese Nangle won the 100 back (56.70) and the 40 free (23.87).
