Derry appoints last members to Robert Frost byway group

DERRY - The Derry Town Council recently appointed two full members and two alternate members to the Robert Frost/Old Stage Coach Scenic Byway Advisory Council.

Conservation Commission Chair Margaret Ives and town historian Richard Holmes will serve as full members on the council, while David Gomez and Katherine Prudhomme-O'Brien join town planning director George Sioras on the council.

The purpose of the byway council is to develop the Robert Frost/Old Stage Coach Scenic Byway, protect the historic and cultural features of the byway, and enhance community development, tourism, and recreational opportunities, according to Town Administrator John Anderson.

Atkinson, Chester, Auburn, and Hampstead also have members on the council. Derry was the last of the towns to appoint its members, according to Anderson.

The creation of the byway will not affect any projects planned for the town of Derry, according to Anderson.

"Mr. Sioras has done some research and is confident we can appoint people to this committee with good effect for the community," he said.

The Southern New Hampshire and Rockingham County planning commissions are also assisting the towns with the advisory council and the scenic byway.

In 2011, Atkinson successfully obtained a designation of its Main Street as a New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byway, which recognizes historic properties as well as the importance of the corridor as the primary stage coach route between Boston and Manchester during the state's colonial era.

The Robert Frost/Old Stage Coach Scenic Byway Advisory Council will explore the potential for expanding that local byway into a regional one that also celebrates the life and history of Robert Frost.
