DURHAM - The Bishop Guertin of Nashua boys' swimming and diving team entered Sunday's Division I meet at the University of New Hampshire having won the last four state titles. Exeter wasn't about to let BG make it five in a row.
The Blue Hawks set a meet record in the 200-yard medley relay and received a strong performance from junior James Mundy in two individual events en route to the state championship at UNH's Swasey Pool. Exeter earned 271 points. Bishop Guertin was second with 208, and Bedford was third with 172.
Mundy won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.71 seconds, and placed second in the 100 free (49.83). He also swam on the 200 free relay team that finished second to Bedford in 1:34.38.
"At the beginning of the year there was a lot of talk about beating BG," Mundy said. "Then we beat them during the regular season, so today we just wanted to prove that regular-season victory wasn't a fluke.
"It's good to win individually, but if you win as a team it says a lot about how hard you work in practice."
Exeter's 200 IM team of Zach Bishop, Kellen Gray, Collin Richardson and Patrick Carignan established the meet record by finishing in 1 minute, 42.17 seconds - nearly two seconds faster than the team's best time during the regular season.
Gray also finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (53.87).
"I think we all had our best times for the splits, but we were certainly surprised with the record," Carignan said.
"Everyone has worked hard in practice all year and we had an undefeated regular season, so we came here with a lot of confidence," Richardson said.
Bishop Guertin's David Pfeifer set a meet record in the 1-meter dive (467.35).
Dover (225) edged Bishop Guertin (177) to win the Division I girls championship. The Green Wave also won the title in 2012. Bedford (161) was third.
Dover's team of Sarah Wydra, Tessa Chapman, Julia DeGregorio and Abi Lent won the 200 medley relay in 1:54.34. Dover also won the 400 free relay in 3:47.07. That team featured Chapman, DeGregorio, Haley Markos and Elizabeth Malia.
Manchester Central received two individual victories from Elizabeth Aldrich, who won the 200 IM in 2:09.17; and the 100 fly in 58.62.
Oyster River of Durham (girls) and Souhegan of Amherst (boys) prevailed in the Division II meet, which was held earlier Sunday.
The Oyster River girls finished with 215 points, 10 points ahead of St. Thomas. Souhegan finished third with 170 points.
The Bobcats posted victories in two relay events: Meaghan Shannon, Haley Jones, Jenna Howland and Tessa Oakes won the 200 free relay in 1:47.09; and Jones, Shannon, Oakes and Charlotte Moore won the 400 free relay in 3:48.17.
Souhegan received individual victories from Tyler Howard in the 500 free (4:59.17) and Alexander Bedard in the 100 breast (1:01.80) and finished with 196 points. St. Thomas was second with 170, and Windham finished third with 149.
The Sabers also finished first in two relay events.
Howard, Bedard, Michael Rego and Jamie Lutze won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.78; and Howard, Lutze, Bedard and Alexander McNally won the 400 free relay in 3:28.19.
