EPPING - A Somersworth father of three who confessed to robbing the Epping Market Basket last Saturday told police he was having financial problems and simply made a bad choice.
Eric Dubois, 32, of 54 Franklin St., was arraigned Tuesday on a robbery charge after allegedly making off with $163 from the grocery store before crashing his car in Rochester while trying to flee from police.
According to a police affidavit, Dubois showed up at the Market Basket in the Brickyard Square shopping center on Route 125 with a note written in blue ink on a piece of paper ripped off from an inspection report.
The note was handed to a store clerk at the service desk and read, "Stay calm. Give me all your money or I start hurting people starting with you. MAKE IT FAST."
The clerk immediately handed over the cash and Dubois allegedly ran from the store, but a store manager wasn't far behind.
The manager told police that he chased Dubois into the parking lot and saw him get into a car. He got the license plate number and gave it to police, who issued a bulletin for other police to be on the lookout.
A short time later, Barrington police officer Adam Winkler noticed the vehicle and attempted to stop it. When he wouldn't stop, police said Winkler pursued Dubois, who crashed on Route 125 in Rochester.
Dubois was arrested at the scene. During a search of his car, police recovered $158 neatly separated by denominations.
During an interview with Epping Police Officer Jonathan Swift, Dubois admitted that he wrote the note, passed it to the clerk, and took off with the money. He told police that "he was going through difficult financial times and made a poor choice."
While searching his car, police found the blue hooded sweatshirt he allegedly wore during the holdup and the other half of the inspection report used for the note.
Dubois was arraigned Monday in Rochester on charges related to the accident brought by Barrington police. He faces reckless operation, reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer and driving after suspension.
Dubois was ordered held at the Strafford County jail on $10,000 cash bail or bond at Tuesday's arraignment in the 10th Circuit Court in Brentwood.
He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
