NH College Roundup: UNH hockey team 5th in both polls

A tie with Providence College dropped the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team one spot to fifth in both national polls released on Monday. The Wildcats received a late goal from Scott Pavelski but skated to a 3-3 draw at the Whittemore Center on Sunday afternoon.

UNH (16-7-3 overall and 11-6-2 in Hockey East) ranks fifth in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Poll. Quinnipiac (21-3-4) received 41 of 50 first-place votes and moved to No. 1 in both polls for the first time. Former No. 1 Minnesota dropped to No. 2 this week.

Dartmouth College (11-8-4) is ranked 17th.

Honors

Keene State sophomore Julie Trodden and freshman Alison Bartlett of Stratham were named Little East Conference Swimmer and Rookie Swimmer of the Week, respectively, and senior Maggie Fitter was selected as women's Track Athlete of the Week on Monday. Bartlett won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle races and also swam a leg in three winning relay teams at the 2013 N.E. Intercollegiate Swimming and Division Association Championships.

Colby-Sawyer's Wol Majong of Manchester was named North Atlantic Conference men's basketball Rookie of the Week for his performances in three games.

Wol led the Chargers with 20.7 points while leading the team to in two victories and a loss last week. He poured in 31 points on 12-for-14 shooting in a loss at Husson.

Women's hockey

Sophomore forward Hannah Armstrong her first career hat trick as the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team blanked the University of Connecticut, 4-0, at the Whittemore Center on Monday. Jenn Gilligan made 19 saves in the shutout. UNH improved to 12-14-2 overall and 8-7-1 in Hockey East, while the Huskies fall to 3-23-3 on the year and 1-14-1 in conference play.

Men's hockey

Senior goalie Jack Astedt made 28 saves to record his school-record eighth career shutout Monday evening as Plymouth State University blanked Salem State University, 3-0, at Plymouth. Freshman Andrew Wigg led the Panthers (16-6-0 overall) with a pair of goals.

Men's basketball

Brian Clarke hit the game winner with 6.6 seconds remaining, and UMass-Boston earned a 65-64 Little East Conference win over Plymouth State University Monday evening in Boston. Alex Burt led the Panthers with 18 points.

Dartmouth update

A women's hockey game between host Dartmouth and Ivy League rival Yale, previously scheduled for Monday, has been moved to tonight at 7. The Big Green enter the contest riding a six-game home unbeaten streak.
