IceCaps come back to top Monarchs
St. John's broke a five-game losing streak and improved to 22-27-3, using a three-goal second period to surge past Manchester (22-23-5).
The Monarchs close the weekend with a 3 p.m. game at Connecticut today.
The second period salvo from St. John's began at 3:20 when Carl Klingberg beat Martin Jones with a shot from the left wing circle to make it 2-1 Manchester.
The IceCaps tied the game just 27 seconds later when Aaron Gagnon split the defense and walked in to beat Jones.
St. John's rode that momentum to take the lead at 12:06 when Patrice Cormier snapped off a shot from the low left circle and into the net.
The IceCaps pushed the lead to 4-2 at 8:24 of the third period with a power-play goal. Spencer Machacek's shot from the left circle beat Jones through a screen.
Manchester cut the score to 4-3 on a Brandon Kozun goal, re-directing a Jordan Weal shot at 14:40, but the IceCaps got an empty net goal from Jason Jaffray with 10 seconds remaining to clinch the win.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead 3:55 into the first period as the top line of Tanner Pearson, Linden Vey and Tyler Toffoli cashed in. Vey sent Pearson away with a breakout pass and Pearson finished by beating Mark Dekanich stick-side.
Brandon Kozun put Manchester up 2-0 at 9:43. Jordan Weal sent a nifty behind the back pass to Kozun for the goal. Rookie Colton Yellow Horn picked up the secondary assist, giving him five points (goal, four assists) in four games with Manchester.
That second Monarchs goal knocked Dekanich from the game as Chris Carrozzi came on to man the IceCaps net.
