Timberlane Regional of Plaistow had a stranglehold on its 14th straight state title going into the final round of action, and of course one of its wrestlers was part of the most exciting match of the finals.
That was at 138 pounds, where Josh Burnham rallied to tie the bout in the last minute of the third period and then scored a pin in overtime for his second straight Division I title.
Burnham trailed Keaton Peterson of Manchester Central and then scored a three-point move in a scramble with less than a minute left to make it 8-8.
Peterson went for a headlock to start the overtime period, but Burnham countered the move and wound up with the pin.
"Once he did that I knew I could slide right behind it and take it," Burnham said.
He was one of five Owls to win their weight class and one of 10 Timberlane wrestlers in the finals. The Owls won with a team score of 233, well ahead of second place Pinkerton Academy of Derry with 146.
Londonderry took third with 123 points, Exeter was fourth at 101 and host Concord round out the top five with 97.
"No, it doesn't get old," Timberlane coach Barry Chooljian said. "You put 10 kids in the finals and you want more champs, but five is great."
Another one of the champs for Timberlane was Tyler Fitzpatrick, who won a thriller at 106 pounds. He also trailed late but managed to get a two-point reversal in the closing seconds to pull off the 4-3 win over Cameron Bennett of Nashua North.
The other winners for the Owls were Adam Corey at 120 pounds, Josh Riley at 170 pounds and Harry Denoncourt at 182 pounds.
The only winner from the city of Manchester was the Little Green's Azalkhon Sarvalov, who edged out Shaun Ahern of Timberlane at 145 pounds.
Sarvalov came to America from Russia seven years ago and started to wrestle three years ago. The junior was third at the Meet of Champions last year.
Ahern made a charge late to cut it close, but Sarvalov managed to hold on for the one-point win.
"I knew I was winning," Sarvalov said. "I just wanted to hold on."
The top six individuals in each weight class advance to the Meet of Champions next week, which will be held at Pinkerton.
Other winners included Marcel LaPlante of Nashua North at 113 pounds, Jean-Luc Lemieux of Pinkerton at 126, Brandon Levesque of Bishop Guertin of Nashua at 132, Tyler Elwood of Nashua South at 152, Ross Dannar of Exeter at 160, Walters Ndi of Concord at 195, Chris Dube of Nashua South at 220 and Camden Crowell of Pinkerton at 285.
Lemieux was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He went 3-0 with two pins. The Coach of the Year was David Rhoades of Pinkerton as well.
