Meredith selectman chair stepping down

MEREDITH - Saying he's got "new things to do" with his life at age 89, Selectman Miller Lovett has announced he is stepping down from the town board.

"There's no problems, no fighting on the board," Lovett said with a chuckle. "I've just got some different, new things to do with my life now."

Lovett has been chair of the board for the past year and has been a selectman for seven years. He came to the board after retiring as a management professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. He is also a retired minister.

He's proud of what the board has accomplished in managing the town budget during his time.

"I think it's pretty significant that during the past five years, during a recession, we've kept the budgets tight and we haven't had to raise the amount to be raised in taxes by more than a few dollars," he said.

He is leaving the board with advice. The town needs "a long-range philosophy of financial management with plans for both the long and short terms," he said.

"In good times, pay down indebtedness and build reserves so that in bad economic times the town will have the resources to make up for the drastic reductions in revenue that occur."

Two candidates have filed for Lovett's seat and that of incumbent Selectman Nate Torr, both three-year terms. Torr, a three-year incumbent, is running for re-election, so there are three candidates running for two seats on the board.

Jayne Greemore, wife of Rep. Robert Greemore, Jr., R-Belknap District 3, is running, as is Lou Kahn, a budget committee member and the town's trustee of trust funds.

Town elections are on March 12 at the Community Center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
